Box Score 2 LANCASTER, Calif. --- Runs were not in short supply on Tuesday as Biola and the University of Antelope Valley peppered balls over JetHawk Stadium to combine for 52 total runs in a doubleheader split.
Â
Biola took game one, 14-11, while the Pioneers claimed the second game, 10-7, thanks to one really big inning.
Â
The Eagles took the lead immediately and began to run away with the opener, scoring at least one run in each of the first five innings behind a strong five innings of work from
Jesse Yancosek.
Â
The righty allowed just three earned runs in an effective 5.0 innings on the bump, benefitting from huge offensive production to leave the game with a 13-4 lead.
Â
Four Biola batters had multiple hits in this one, as the team combined for 19 total hits.
Julian Jarrard and
Jimmy Gallarda provided the most production, going a combined 7-for-9 with six RBI and five runs scored. Gallarda was the only Eagle with multiple extra-base hits, logging two run-scoring doubles.
Â
The game ended with a final score a lot closer than the game actually was, as errors late allowed seven runs to UAV in the final two innings. Only three of those seven runs were earned.
Sean Rothfuss had a strong four innings in relief, despite the four unearned runs crossing the plate.
Â
The two teams combined for 11 errors in this opening game, led by seven from BU.
Â
The second game also saw a lot of crooked numbers. Biola again opened the game with three consecutive innings of scoring, but only posted one run in each inning this time, building a 3-0 lead for starter
Sean McCarrell. The final of those runs came on a
Julian Jarrard solo shot, his ninth homerun this season.
Â
The Pioneers overcame that 3-0 deficit with back-to-back two-run innings in the third and fourth innings, scoring all four runs with two outs as Biola struggled to close out innings and overcome early walks. McCarrell came out of the game before the fourth inning, handing the ball to
Rob Groeschell, who's pitched just one inning since Feb. 7.
Â
Ten of the 17 runs scored in the second ballgame came in the fifth inning, as Biola tacked on four runs off of another run-scoring hit by Gallarda and a huge three-RBI double by
Eugene Shin.
Â
Shin's double came on one of the 14 different occasions that Biola had the bases loaded during this two-game series. It was one of the few times the Eagles were able to take advantage of it in the game-two loss.
Â
The Pioneers tacked on six unearned runs in the bottom of the fifth to retake the lead for good. They scored those runs on three hits, two errors, a walk and a hit-by-pitch in what was not a very fundamentally sound inning for BU.
Â
The Eagles move to 14-23 on the season after this split and UAV moves to 18-19 overall. Biola is back home to host No. 12 Westmont for a three-game set Wednesday and Thursday. Play begins at 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday.
