THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. --- Biola got a great, gutsy showing from nationally-ranked
Kathryn Ashford and a patient win from
Madeline Heer, but came up empty otherwise in Friday's 3-6 loss at California Lutheran.
Â
Ashford earned a win at singles, in the second-to-last individual match to finish, and Heer won No. 2 singles in the very last individual match, salvaging things when Biola got down 0-4 early on.
Ashford forced her match to a tiebreak, where she was able to figure out her opponent's attack en route to a sound 7-3 victory.
Â
"By the end of the match Kat was reading her opponent's balance, which led to good shot selection," said Head Coach
Dee Henry. "She was able to bounce back between points in the tiebreak to help her finish it decisively."
Â
Heer won the first set, lost the second in a tiebreak and then won the super breaker 10-7 to clinch the win at No. 2. It is her second win of the season at the No. 2 position; she also has one at No. 3.
Â
"Madeline's patience, combined with her excellent choices at key times, were the difference in this match," said Henry. "Her opponent was a solid hitter, and when she needed to she scrambled to get things back, so Mady had to hit lots of winners."
Â
The Eagles' only other point came in Ashford's doubles match. She paired with
Brooke Sanford for the first time this season and got a 9-8 (5-0) victory in the middle doubles. Theirs was the longest and most competitive of the doubles matches on the afternoon.
Â
Sanford and Ashford were down 0-3 in the match before beginning their successful comeback.
Â
Biola's lost six matches in a row and drops to 1-8 on the season with the loss. Cal Lutheran improved to 3-3.
Â
The Eagles are next in action against Principia College on 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday at the Biola Tennis Center.
