Scoring, Steals And A Sweep

Biola outscores William Jessup 13-2 in a Saturday sweep to close out its first 3-0 series on the season.

Eric Diomartich took a no-hitter into the sixth inning in a great game two outing.
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Biola got its first Golden State Athletic Conference series sweep of the season on the back of two fantastic starting pitching performances, an early offensive explosion and some sickly speed on the base paths resulting in 10 steals.

"We were excited about the opportunity to be aggressive today," said Assistant Coach Trevor Davidson. "…looking to carry that through to the rest of the season and hoping for more."

The series sweep could not have come at a better time for Biola as it finishes up what was a lighter portion of its schedule, facing three of the bottom four teams in the GSAC. With the three wins this weekend, the Eagles solidified their 6-3 record in the nine games of those three series.

The Eagles got to the two wins thanks to huge pitching performances by Micah Beyer and Buddy Brouwer, Biola's killer Bs if you will, in the first game, and Eric Diomartich in game two.

Beyer went six innings of shutout ball in the opener, holding the Warriors to just two hits and one walk in his third fantastic outing in a row. He lowered his team-leading ERA to 3.38 and improved to 3-2 on the season.

"It was a lot of fun to see Micah come out and really command the plate," said Davidson. "He got good defense behind him and just continued to fill it up and trust his stuff."

Brouwer pitched two innings of scoreless relief and now sits third on the squad in ERA, all of his 16.1 innings coming out of the bullpen. Sean Rothfuss closed out with an inning of work where he was spotted a 9-0 lead by his teammates.

That lead came off a smattering of runs across five of the eight innings Biola went to the bat rack. The Eagles used a combination of extra-base hitting and sound baserunning to get one run in the first, two in the third, one in the fourth, two in the fifth and "exploded" for three in the sixth.

Biola swiped half of the 10 bags they stole in game one, including two by Andy Smith. Add to that doubles by Tanner Swire, Andres Rodriguez and Julian Jarrard and its like a recipe for instant offense.

That trio of hitters was 5-for-9 with four runs and an RBI in the morning game. Smith and Rob Groeschell also tacked on multiple hits in that one as the Eagles got 13 hits on the board against the three arms the Warriors trotted out.

Diomartich was so in the zone in his start Biola didn't need any offense until much later in the game. The junior lefty held William Jessup without a hit into the sixth inning, before he allowed one single and came out of the game.

He ended with 5.1 innings pitched, allowing one earned run after that single came around to score, and he piled on eight strikeouts in a vintage, on-point Eric Diomartich performance.

"Dio came out and was the pitcher that we know he is," said Davidson. "He came out with a lot of confidence and it was good to see."

By the time he came out from the game the Eagles' already had their winning margin, putting together a 4-0 lead off a two-run single by Andrew Frank and two run-scoring outs.

A couple more singles got WJU both of its runs in that sixth inning before Jimmy Gallarda came in to close the door. He struck out two in one inning of work to earn a save for the second time in this series.

The three victories this weekend helped Biola improve to 10-15 (8-13 GSAC). The Warriors dropped to 3-17 (3-16 GSAC) in what's been a challenging first season of a baseball program.

Biola faces Vanguard in its next time out, a Friday-Saturday road series next weekend. The Lions are currently 19-11 (13-9 GSAC) and sit one spot ahead of Biola in the conference standings, fourth.
