HIGHLIGHTS
IRVINE, Calif. --- Biola's season came to a close with a 16-15 overall record for the third year in a row following a 80-54 loss in the Golden State Athletic Conference Tournament First Round.
Â
Biola kept pace with the hosting No. 7 Concordia team through much of the first half until the depth and athleticism of the Irvine Eagles began to show through with a late first-half run.
Â
Scoring was thin on both sides at the neutral court at Irivne Valley College through the first 10 minutes, as both teams experienced separate surges the left the game in a 11-10 deadlock in favor of the No. 2-seeded Concordia side.
Â
After the
Dakari Archer layup that helped Biola pull it to that score within one point, the game was never close again as Ty Armstrong began making baskets in the paint and CUI started taking advantage of mounting turnover numbers from Biola that led to a 24-8 run by CUI to end the half.
Â
The Eagles came out of the break facing an 18-35 deficit which seemed manageable when Archer came right out of the break with a corner triple to start the first few minutes of the half positively for BU. He and the visiting Eagles scored six of the first 10 points and 15 of the first 30 before the frustration began to mount again.
Â
Archer fouled out of the game with nearly nine minutes on the clock, committing five of Biola's 19 personal fouls, which led to 15 points for CUI from the charity stripe.
Â
Armstrong, Stephen Grosey and CUI's other bigs were also able to neutralize
Mike Kurtz inside, holding the Eagles' senior seven-footer to two points on just three attempts from the floor all night.
Â
It was Armstrong's night to shine, as the recent All-GSAC selection went 10-of-17 from the floor to amass 23 points, 12 rebounds, three blocks, a few assists and even three made three-point shots.
Â
He and the rest of CUI's stacked starting five and bench kept relentless pressure on Biola all night, causing 17 total turnovers, split evenly between the two halves. Those turnovers resulted in 30 extra points for Concordia, who also won the rebound battle, as they worked their way to the eventual 26-point victory to bring Biola's season to a halt.
Â
Caelan Tiongson and
Sal Carlos were bright spots in an otherwise very dark outing for Head Coach Dave Homquist's side. They injected some energy off the bench, which is not an every game occurrence for this team, combining for 17 points in just 30 minutes on the court.
Â
The Eagles end the year 16-15 overall, squeaking by with an eighth-consecutive winning season. Concordia improves to 25-7 overall and gets to host No. 21 Westmont on Saturday night in the GSAC Tournament Semifinals.
