LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Biola was looking forward to hosting San Diego Christian on Saturday, hoping to break its recent two-match losing streak against a Golden State Athletic Conference team that entered play with a similar season record.
Â
A brisk five hours later, Biola fell just short of accomplishing that goal, dropping the match to the Hawks, 4-5. The Eagles dug a 4-2 hole in singles competition and could muster two doubles wins, but could not nail down the third, allowing the Hawks to clinch the victory.
Â
"They all played tough and I am very proud of every one of our players," said Head Coach
Dee Henry. "They all make each other better."
Â
Biola got wins from
Susan Carmichael and
Lauren Vogel in singles play. Carmichael snapped a two-match skid with a gutsy three-set win in the No. 3 position, which was the final singles match to finish before doubles began.
Â
"Susan selected high-percentage shots and played a great match," said Henry. "Kat was finishing her third set as Susan was just finishing her second."
Â
Vogel actually got the Eagles off to a winning start with her straight-set (6-2; 6-1) victory at No. 6. Contrary to Carmichael, Vogel's match was the quickest singles matchup to finish.
Â
Staring at the two-match deficit, Biola performed well when the transition to doubles occurred. Wins came at the No. 2 and No. 3 pairings and were both by a healthy margin.
Ashford and Carmichael were the first to finish, beating Roxana Daneshjoo and Miriam Boeta 8-1 to tighten it to 4-3. Then, the match was tied as Vogel and
Brooke Sanford completed their 8-4 victory.
Â
Unfortunately for Biola, the final match to finish did not go in its favor, with SDC's top pairing clinching the match with an 8-2 victory.
Â
"Madeline [Heer] and Kelsey had some brilliant play, but the other team's high shots were a bit out of reach, resulting in a shot they could attack," said Henry.
Â
The Eagles drop to 3-14 (2-7 GSAC) following the loss, while San Diego Christian bumps its record up to 3-10 (3-6 GSAC). Biola is back on the court on Tuesday for a road match at Concordia (7-10, 6-4 GSAC).
