Box Score IRVINE, Calif. --- Biola was cruising along, getting a few timely hits and capitalizing on four errors by No. 17 Concordia, but the luck ran out in the bottom of the sixth when the home team concluded a stretch of three consecutive scoring innings by pushing the go-ahead and eventually game-winning run across home plate.
Â
Both teams got steady performances from their starters, with the game up in the air until the relief staffs got to work, but the later scoring by Concordia led them to a 4-3 win.
Â
Garrett Picha went five innings for Biola, exiting with a lead intact after working his way out of a bases loaded jam in the bottom of the fifth to hand the ball over to the bullpen with a 3-2 advantage.
Â
Those three runs came early on as Biola got two in the third, keyed by a run-scoring triple off the bat of
Paul Slater and a sacrifice fly from
Andy Smith, and then they added another in the fifth after Smith was able to advance to second thanks to a CUI error and a
Tanner Swire single scored him.
Â
Concordia got one in the fourth off a wild pitch and one in the fifth before Picha gained control of the situation, but their game-winning offense came against
Daniel Jang in the sixth.
Â
A lead-off single and stolen base had the pressure turned all the way up on the freshman who was able to get one out before hitting a batter and then surrounding the two-run double that put the home team on top.
Â
He went on to finish off the game, allowing no more hits in the final two frames, but the damage had been done and the Eagles' bats were not up to the task of undoing it on this day, getting just two base runners over the final three innings.
Â
The loss drops Biola to 13-20 (10-18 GSAC) this year, including a 1-3 mark against Concordia. CUI improves to 28-9 (20-8 GSAC) and is just two games back from first place in the conference. The two sides meet again tomorrow for a doubleheader, beginning at noon.
