Box Score 1 |
Box Score 2 LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Seven was not the lucky number for Biola on Saturday, as the Eagles lost both halves of a doubleheader against No. 6 The Master's College, and allowed the Mustangs seven runs in each outing.
Â
Biola couldn't get the sticks going quite as effectively as they did yesterday, posting just a total of seven runs in the 7-4 and 7-3 losses.
Â
Micah Beyer took the bump for Head Coach
Jay Sullenger's squad in the opener, looking to continue his streak of five consecutive starts with three or fewer earned runs allowed.
Â
The Master's College got to him immediately, scoring runs in each of the first two innings to open up a 2-0 lead before Biola even got its cleanup hitter to the plate.
Â
When that cleanup hitter,
Julian Jarrard, did reach the plate he got to touch it when he hit an opposite field big fly to cut the deficit in half right away. Biola would get another runner in scoring position in that second inning, but left him stranded and lose their opportunity to tie it early.
Â
Noone scored in the third inning, but the Mustangs broke out against Beyer in the fourth, turning three hits into three more runs and widening the gap to 5-1. A Nick Covello homerun tacked on another in the fifth and brought Beyer up to six earned runs against on the day, tying his season-high.
Â
The Eagles did their best to force the issue in their half of the sixth inning, using a lead-off double from
Tanner Swire and two walks and two singles to score three of their own and force the TMC starter, Ty Galloway, out of the game.
Â
Unfortunately for Biola Galloway's replacement, Aaron Alexander, was lights out for the remainder of the game, picking up a 3.2 inning save and holding Biola to just one more hit.
Â
Eric Diomartich got the start in the final game of the series, looking to help the Eagles pick up a surprise series victory over the No. 6 team in the nation. It started off looking like he could do just that, as he struck out the first three hitters he faced.
Â
With confidence flowing after Dio's electric first half-inning, Biola's offense took their turn and grabbed the lead first for the first time this series.
Rob Groeschell singled home
Andy Smith and then
Jimmy Gallarda followed with a single of his own to bring home
Julian Jarrard and get Biola an early 2-0 lead.
Â
Gallarda had a great day at the dish, going 4-for-6 over the two games, seeing time at first base and at pitcher. He had two RBI, one in each game.
Â
Diomartich looked great through the second inning too, allowing a hit and two walks to load the bases, but getting a fly out and strikeout to escape the inning unscathed.
Â
He could not remain unscathed though, as the Mustangs picked up two in the third inning to tie the game. Right when it seemed as if a pitcher's duel was what the doctor ordered, TMC's league-leading offensive juggernaut reared its head in the top of the fifth.
Â
The Mustangs put together seven hits, including three doubles, off of Diomartich to score five runs and blow the game open at 7-2. Jarrard blooped a single into the outfield to score
Paul Slater and close the scoring at 7-3.
Â
Sullenger stuck with Diomartich for one more inning before turning the ball over to Gallarda to finish it off. Biola's lefty starter showed his resilience by putting together a 1-2-3 inning in the sixth before handing the ball over.
Â
Gallarda had another strong inning of work in the top of the seventh, allowing just one hit in a scoreless outing. He's not allowed a single earned run since Feb. 28, a stretch of five scoreless relief innings.
Â
After losing the last two games of this series Biola falls to 13-19 (10-17 GSAC) and TMC improves its league-leading mark to 27-7 (21-6 GSAC), 1.5 games ahead of Westmont.
Â
The Eagles are back in action on Friday at No. 18 Concordia (24-9, 17-8 GSAC).
