SANTA BARBARA, Calif. --- It was a tough day in Santa Barbara for Biola Women's Tennis, as the Eagles were blanked 9-0 by No. 11 Westmont.
Â
"Our singles players fought hard and to the very end of the match. Our players are seeing openings," said Head Coach
Dee Henry. "Doubles were getting into a great position."
Â
Biola trudged through most of singles play, as almost all six players were swept in two sets, by scores of 6-2 or lower. The lone exception was sophomore
Madeline Heer, who won her first set, 6-2, but dropped the other two and lost in three sets.
Â
Junior
Kathryn Ashford was swept 6-0, 6-0 in the first singles spot by No. 6 Lauren Stratman.
Â
Doubles play was eerily similar to singles as the No. 1 and No. 2 spots dropped 8-2 and 8-2. However, the freshman-senior pairing of
Brooke Sanford and
Lauren Vogel battled back from down 3-6 and almost forced a tiebreaker. Ultimately, the third doubles team fell 9-7.
Â
The loss is Biola's second-straight 9-0 defeat, falling to BYU-Hawaii last weekend in La Mirada.
Â
Now 1-7 overall on the season, with the sole win coming on Feb. 10 to Hope International University, the Eagles sit sixth in the extremely difficult Golden State Athletic Conference. With the top-four teams ranked in the top-15 in the nation, the Eagles will look to tread water in conference play as the hold on to a one game lead over HIU.
Â
Up next for Biola, the Eagles head to Thousand Oaks to take on California Lutheran (2-2).
