Box Score SANTA BARBARA, Calif. --- The Eagles fall to No. 20 Westmont in overtime, 64-60, in the final game of the regular season. Biola finishes seventh in the Golden State Athletic Conference and faces a first round playoff matchup at No. 8 Concordia on Wednesday.
Â
Ok, now let's talk about the technical. With 10 seconds left in overtime,
Mike Kurtz corralled his 13
th rebound and gave Biola possession down two points.
Pierre Zook raced the ball up court and slipped amidst a crowd of Warriors. As Zook is fighting off defenders, a timeout is called and awarded to Biola, a strategy often used to maintain possession when trapped. However, the Eagles were out of timeouts this late into the game. As such, a technical foul was called, and Westmont received two free throws, which they hit, before Biola got the ball back. Instead of having the ball with a two-point deficit, the Eagles now faced a four-point deficit that was impossible to overcome with just the few seconds left.
Â
The technical unfortunately overshadows an excellent, back-and-forth game where the largest lead ever held was just eight points (Westmont at the 13-minute mark). Both defenses were locked in as neither team was able to create much open space. Granted, neither team could connect often when they did create space, shooting a combined 12-of-42 from deep. Despite Westmont's dominance in the paint, doubling up Biola in points in the paint, the Eagles made up for it through piecing together 16 more field goal attempts via winning the turnover battle and relentless work on the offensive glass. Â
Â
Another big reason why the Eagles were in this one throughout:
Mike Kurtz. The senior led all scorers with 23 points, dominated on both ends and posted huge numbers all across the stat sheet. He created six of those crucial extra possessions, corralling four offensive boards and swiping two steals. He added to his top-10 in the country rebounding and block totals with 13 and four, respectively. As if that wasn't enough, he also scored five straight points, including his third three-point make of the game with 25 seconds left, in the last minute of the second half to send the game to overtime. Kurtz came into the night without scoring more than one three-point shot in any of the last five times out. In an off night for Biola's prolific guard duo, Kurtz and
Steve Herve, 14 total points, stepped up to combine for over 60 percent of the team's offense.

In their two matchups this year, Concordia has won handily with the latest, an 82-68 win, over Biola at Chase Gymnasium on Feb. 17.Â
