Role Reversal

Biola fails to post a point through eight minutes of play, but still comes away with a convincing conference win.

Steve Herve hit two clutch free throws in the final few minutes to protect Biola's comeback win.
Box Score EL CAJON, Calif. --- It is not considered best practice in collegiate men's basketball to spot your opponent 15 points to start the game, but that's what Biola did and it managed to get away with it tonight.

The Eagles traveled to San Diego for a matchup with San Diego Christian on Saturday night, fresh off a hard-fought loss in Arizona just four days ago. After going over eight minutes into the game without registering a point the Eagles' offense exploded to run laps around SDC in an eventual 75-63 road victory.

Biola went 0-for-7 from the field during that painful eight minute and 12 second stretch, and in addition to the poor shooting posted four personal fouls and three turnovers to get way behind.

A much-needed timeout by Head Coach Dr. Dave Holmquist lit a fire under the Eagles and set them rolling in the right direction for the remainder of the half.

It was a long and tedious road back into the game, as Biola trailed from the first bucket all the way through the point where it claimed its first lead of the game with 15:09 left in half two.

The Eagles used two different runs to overcome the large deficit. The first came in the late stages of the first half, when Biola went on a 13-7 run to bring the game within nine, as close as it got in before halftime.

It was once the second half began that the two teams began trending in completely different directions, as the Hawks team that shot nearly 50 percent from the field and 55 percent from deep in the first half, began the second frame shooting just 2-of-5 from the floor before Biola took the lead.

The Eagles, after shooting just 40 percent through 20 minutes shot 57 percent in the second half, including going 5-of-7 with four makes in a row at the beginning of the new half.

Pierre Zook's efficiency and adaptability keyed the Biola comeback effort, as he went 8-of-12 from the field in the game, taking just as many mid-range jumpers as shots from deep.

He led all players with 25 points, helping the Eagles pull away down the final seven minutes with 19 of his points coming in the second half.

Mike Kurtz and Dakari Archer also reached double-digit scoring for the Eagles, coming up with 16 and 13 points, respectively. Biola's big three combined for 20 of the Eagles' 26 made shots from the field. Zook and Archer also got the job done at the free-throw line with a combined 10-of-12 shooting display.

Kurtz and Steve Herve keyed a dominant Biola defense in the final 20 minutes that held the Hawks to just 24 points, barely over half of Biola's second-half output. Kurtz and Herve were credited with three blocks in this one. The Eagles held SDC to 25 percent shooting in an ugly display of offense.

Biola improves to 16-9 (4-7 GSAC) with the victory and San Diego Christian sinks deeper into the cellar of the Golden State Athletic Conference at 5-14 (0-11 GSAC). Biola's next outing is at No. 2 Hope International (21-2, 9-2 GSAC) on Feb. 14.
