PASADENA, Calif. --- Biola slipped to 0-2 to begin its season after its opponent, Caltech, literally did slip on the court. The Eagles fell to the Beavers, 2-6, with one match not finishing because one of the home team's players could not gain grip in wet conditions and went down.
Â
Madeline Heer had a great individual day, getting the Eagles' lone singles victory and partnering with
Kelsey Post to get an 8-4 win at No. 2 doubles. Both victories were Heer's first of the season as she was shutout yesterday against Arizona Christian.
Â
"Madeline recognized the opportunities she had and capitalized effectively," said Head Coach
Dee Henry.
Â
Heer won her match against the Beavers' Sophia Chen in straight sets, 6-2; 6-1. Five of her seven singles victories in 2014 also came in just two sets.
Â
She and Post combined for the only doubles victory thanks to some confident play. They took the match from Grace Yao and Vinci Chen 8-4.
Â
"They took charge of their match," said Henry. "They just played some high percentage tennis."
Â
Outside of the two wins, Biola is still gaining its traction on the courts with the other four singles matches to finish all coming in two sets and most in decisive fashion.
Â
Freshman
Brooke Sanford came the closest to stealing a set in singles, pushing her opponent to a 5-7 second set.
Â
The Eagles' No. 3 doubles pairing worked hard to stave off defeat against the Beavers' Erin Wang and Sophia Chen. Sanford and
Lauren Vogel saved two match points before eventually falling 8-6.
Â
Biola resumes its season schedule at home on Tuesday for a date with Hope International (0-1, 0-1 GSAC).
