Shutout Shuffle

Both teams get one shutout in a Saturday split at Eagles Diamond.

Micah Beyer shut down ACU's hitters in the second game shutout.
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 LA MIRADA, Calif. --- A day after posting 11 runs in a win, Biola's offense was blanked by Arizona Christian in game one on Saturday, 0-8, but it rebounding with a blanking of its own in the nightcap, 2-0. The split gives Biola its first Golden State Athletic Conference series win of the 2015 campaign.

"The guys did what they needed to do to get the series win with that second game today," said Head Coach Jay Sullenger. "We didn't play great in the first one, but we really pitched well in the second one and did enough offensively to win."

The opener on Saturday was forgettable all around as the Eagles were shutdown by the ACU starter, Joel Kilnkhammer, and a bevy of Firestorm relievers.

The Eagles posted just five hits in the first game, while allowing 11 and committing two errors in the field, ultimately leading to the 8-0 ACU victory.

Eric Diomartich got the ball to start the opener on the bump for Biola and did not have one of his best outings of the year, seemingly lacking control of his off-speed pitches throughout his four innings of work. He allowed six of the Firestorm's eight runs and was run out of the game in the fifth. He falls to 0-5 on the season.

His batters could not back him up at all with timely hitting. Although the Eagles forced the ACU staff to face 13 batters over the minimum, its hitters also stranded 13 runners on base in the loss.

Micah Beyer took the ball in game two, determined not to have a repeat performance from the first game. The freshman earned his second win of the season in his third start of the year. His 5.2 scoreless innings of work helped him improve his ERA to 4.05, which is a team-best.

"Micah did a fabulous job," said Sullenger. "At one point he had to actually get five outs in an inning, and he did that without giving up a run. This win is definitely on him; he earned it."

The freshman held the Firestorm bats to just two hits and struck out six in his time on the bump. His location wavered a little toward the end of his outing, as he finished with five walks and actually faced seven more than the minimum when you include the two errors the Eagles committed when he was on the hill.

His performance was backed up by just enough offense from Biola, getting started in the third inning with one of the most interesting bits of run manufacturing you will see.

The Eagles led off that inning with their 9-1-2 spots in the order and got bunt singles by each of those men (Paul Slater, Rob Groeschell and Tanner Swire) to get the bases loaded with no outs for Julian Jarrard.

Jarrard recorded a sac fly to score Slater and get Biola its first lead of the day at 1-0. The ACU starter, Brett Swartz, would work out of the jam and Biola wouldn't tack on its next run until the sixth inning when Jeremy Barth advanced two bases on a Gallarda fielder's choice that forced an ACU throwing error.

Gallarda also got some action on the mound in this one. He allowed one hit in a scoreless seventh inning to close out the game, get the save and solidify Biola's first series win.

It was Gallarda's second save of the season. He's got the second-lowest ERA on the team with a 4.09 mark in 10.0 innings of relief.

Biola becomes 6-12 (4-11 GSAC) with the Saturday split and will look forward to its chance to avenge a surprise extra-inning loss from earlier in the season when it hosts Bethesda on Tuesday afternoon.
