HIGHLIGHTS
LA MIRADA, Calif. --- When the highlight of the night comes at halftime, you know it likely was not a favorable result to the game. That was the case tonight, as after a competitive first half Biola takes a step back in the final 20 minutes in a 67-82 home loss to No. 7 Concordia.
Â
Biola saw some strong play early on, with
Dakari Archer and
Mike Kurtz both very productive from the field in the first half, and its defense holding CUI to just under 43 percent from the floor, resulting in a one-point halftime lead (37-36).
The Eagles shot over 59 percent from the field in the first half, which masked the fact that the team was allowing Concordia to bring in offensive rebounds and turnovers at a higher-than-average rate.
Â
Naturally, when the shooting percentage normalizes and the other stats stay around the same, the score begins to trend in the other direction.
That is exactly what happened to Head Coach
Dr. Dave Holmquist's team in this one. The Eagles shot 50 percent from the field in half two, still great, but not great enough as Concordia upped its efficiency to upwards of 57 percent.
Â
Biola was behind the visiting Eagles' tempo all night long, having to play catch-up and resulting in a bunch of fouls, especially in the second half. Biola allowed CUI to go to the free throw line 15 times in the second half, and Concordia converted at a 73 percent clip, giving the visitors 10 more points off of free throws in this contest.
Â
Couple better field goal shooting and free points with Biola's nine second-half turnovers, giving them 18 on the night, and it is no wonder the visiting Eagles outscored the hosts 46-31 down the stretch.
Â
Concordia built that margin by scoring 13 of the first 14 points in the second half and literally never looking back. After CUI upped its lead to eight by the 16:29 mark it never trailed again. The lead changed six different times in the first half, again emphasizing why halftime was the best part of this one.
Â
The Eagles had a few runs sprinkled throughout, often culminating in and-one opportunities by Archer, who ended the game with a team-high 18 points and was 2-of-3 from the line on his tacked on free throws.
Â
Ty Armstrong and Stephen Grossey carried the game for Concordia. Both were powerful presences inside, with the 6-foot-50-inch (seemingly) Armstrong piling on a game-high 20 points in just 25 minutes on the floor. Grossey flew a little more under the radar, but was solid on the glass and efficient from the floor, ending with 13 rebounds and 10 points on 5-of-6 shooting.
Â
Biola falls to 16-11 (4-9 GSAC) and Concordia improves its first-place standing by moving to 23-5 (12-2 GSAC). The Eagles have just three games of regular-season basketball left, including its final home game this Saturday at 7:30 p.m. Â
Also of note, Biola President Dr. Barry Corey and Biola AS President Tyler Hormel defeated CUI's president and AS president 7-3 in a free-throw shooting contest.
