Box Score FULLERTON, Calif. --- Biola had a shot as time expired to take down the No. 5 team in the country in its own gym. The shot bounced off the side of the rim, leaving the Eagles with another, close-but-not-quite story and Golden State Athletic Conference loss.
Â
Biola had a lead as late as the 3:07 mark in the second half, but just as it did in Feb. 3
rd's 65-70 loss at No. 7 Arizona Christian, could not finish out the contest with a win. No. 5 Hope International rode an 8-5 run over those final three minutes to earn the 57-55 win.
Â
Pierre Zook is the man who had the ball in his hands with less than a second to shoot, which was a perfect scenario for Biola, because he was the team-leader in scoring in the one (21 points) and is the Eagles' most-consistent shooter.
Â
An awkward angle and receiving the ball off a deflection on a lon throw-in made it a near-impossible shot that almost no one besides Zook could have even gotten close to a make. In the end that miss send the sea of red there to support the Eagles home disappointed after what was a great game of National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics basketball.
Â
Zook began the game on fire, shooting 7-of-10 with 17 points in the first half, helping Biola go into the break up by two over a Royals team that beat Biola by 25 points inside of Chase Gymnasium earlier this year.
Â
Zook slowed down considerably in the second half, but it was
Dakari Archer who picked up the slack after an atrocious first half and kept Biola in the game, despite HIU shooting 100 percent better in the second frame than it did in the first (25 percent to 50 percent).
Â
Matt Green and Austin Sanford both shot exactly 50 percent from the floor in their second half as they combined to be the Royals' top two scorers in the final 20 minutes. Sanford had zero points in the first half.
Â
HIU took the lead coming out of halftime and held onto it through the first five minutes of the new half, but an 11-2 run by the Eagles secured a seven-point advantage for BU heading into the last quarter of the game.
Â
That lead would begin to disappear down the stretch as the Royals' made the most out of their possessions and limited Biola in its own possessions with three blocks. Tonight was a rare occasion where Biola was actually outblocked, 8-5, and held without a block in the entire second half.
Â
Green scored the game-winning points for HIU by making three of his four free throw attempts to finish the game. He nearly cost the Royals by intentionally missing his final free throw, getting called for an infraction by the officials and setting up Biola for Zook's last heave.
Â
The loss drops Biola to 16-10 (4-8 GSAC) and helps the No. 5 Royals to a 22-2 (10-2 GSAC) mark.
Â
Biola has a big week ahead, with its final two home games coming inside of Chase Gymnasium on Tuesday and Saturday. The Eagles host conference-leading No. 10 Concordia on the 17
th and Vanguard on the 21
st.
