LA MIRADA, Calif. --- A win is a win. Biola barely squeaked by with a 5-4 Golden State Athletic Conference victory over Hope International on Tuesday, but it squeaked by nonetheless and sits a 3-0 (2-0 GSAC) through the first three matches of the 2015 campaign.
Â
The troubling thing about this tight victory is that two of Biola's five points came off of forfeits by Hope International, which only had five players in its lineup.
Â
"Today, we just weren't at the same level as we were in the first two matches," said Head Coach
Brent Worthington. "We didn't prepare as well and it showed up. I take full responsibility for that."
Â
Preparation woes aside, it was a huge three-set victory by
Andrew Greenfield in Biola's No. 5 singles spot that allowed Biola to escape with the narrow victory.
Â
The junior transfer dropped his first set to Cody Walker before rebounding to get the three-set victory (5-7; 6-1; 6-3) and secure Biola's fourth point in singles, which ultimately sealed the match with one free doubles point.
"Andrew came back from a set down in his Biola debut," said Worthington. "I was proud of how hard Andrew fought to come back, win the third set and clinch our third win of the year.
Â
Greenfield was not the only player seeing his first time on the courts for Biola in this one.
Michael Vartuli got his first action of the year by partnering with
Joe Turnquist in a close 6-8 loss at No. 2 doubles.
Â
For the first time this year Biola failed to get a physical win a doubles match. They were 0-2 in the two contests that were actually played out.
Â
It's wins in singles came via Greenfield, who was already mentioned, and
Philip Westwood, Turnquist and
David Garcia.
Â
Garcia and Turnquist both improved to 3-0 in singles matches in 2015. Westwood battled to a decisive two-set (6-2; 6-1) victory at the No. 2 spot to move to 2-1 on the year and 1-1 in conference matches.
Â
"Philip played his best match of the year, winning quickly and decisively," said Worthington.
Â
Biola has a tough GSAC matchup looming as its next time out is on the road against No. 24 San Diego Christian (3-1, 1-1 GSAC). It will be the Eagles' first ranked opponent of the season.
