Defense Drops The Fighting Saints

Biola holds a team that averages 87 points-per-game to just 48 in another top-25 win.

Dakari Archer had another standout performance as he went for 24 points in a win over No. 16 Carroll.
Box Score LA MIRADA, Calif. --- There is still more than two full months left on the Biola Men's Basketball schedule, but with its 59-48 win on Saturday night over No. 16 Carroll College the Eagles already have 13 victories on the 2015-16 campaign.

Biola has won five consecutive games, and all five of those victories have come by at least nine points, including the 11-point defensively-keyed win over the Fighting Saints this evening.

The 48 points allowed to Carroll College on Saturday is a new season-best for Head Coach Dr. Dave Holmquist's defense. It came against a Fighting Saints team that came into the night averaging over 87 points-per-game.

"This was a gritty win for us," said Holmquist. "They are a well-coached team that played hard and we knew it would be a tough game. You really have to earn it against them."

Despite the 11-point difference at the end this game was tight throughout much of the 40 minutes before a cold streak stymied Carroll's efforts and helped Biola pull away in the second half.

The Eagles took a 5-0 lead after the first 1:36 of the game as a Trevor Treinen three and Dakari Archer layup helped Biola make the most of Carroll starting its game 0-of-5 from the field.

After taking that lead Biola never trailed or let the Fighting Saints tie it through the remainder of the half and the team took a narrow 28-27 lead into the locker room.

It was a great team effort on the offensive end through the first 20 minutes for Biola as Archer led with 11 points then five other players also scored at least two.

Missing one of their top scorers due to injury the Fighting Saints had to rely on their role players a bit more as they spread the scoring between seven players in the first half with no player having more than six points.

An and-one conversion and another mid-range jumper to start the half helped Carroll take its only lead of the game and extend it to four points by the 17:32 mark.

Then a 10-2 run from Biola flipped the script and gave the Eagles a four-point advantage with just over 13 minutes remaining in the game. During that 10-point stretch Biola got four points from both Terrell Funches and Archer.

Biola would never trail again in the game and even held a lead of up to 14 in the second half as it cruised to another non-conference victory. The Eagles held Carroll to just 25 percent shooting in the second half by locking down the inside and forcing the Fighting Saints to throw up 14 three-point attempts in the final 20 minutes.

Archer led all scorers with 24 points. He was followed by Funches with 12 and then six guys with between two and five points each. No player on Carroll's roster got into double-digits.

Christian Misi had another strong game in his limited minutes off the bench. He compiled four points and four rebounds in just eight minutes on the floor.

"It was another good team win for us," said Holmquist.

A key indicator of just how good of a team win it was is that 24 of Biola's 59 points came from players coming in off the bench.

The win moves Biola to 13-1 and drops No. 16 Carroll to 7-3 overall. Biola will take a short break for Christmas before returning to action with a home game against the University of Alberta on Dec. 28.
