Box Score LA MIRADA, Calif. --- It was one of those games where you had an uneasy feeling in the pit of your stomach for most of the night as it seemed to be much closer of a contest than one would think it would be. A late second half surge helped Biola put a bit of a lid on those feelings though in a 83-66 victory over La Sierra on Saturday night.
Â
While Biola led from first basket the final buzzer the Golden Eagles utilized strong offensive rebounding and some points off of Biola turnovers to keep the game uneasily close up until a 10-point run from Biola put the game out of reach with about five minutes left to play.
Â
La Sierra had kept the Biola lead between 8-12 points for most of the night, but the Eagles' 10-point run brought the difference to 18 which proved to be insurmountable for the LSU offense that did not have the depth to compete with Biola's bevy of scorers.
Â
More than half of the Golden Eagles' points came from two men, Gerald Williams and Andre Marquez, who accounted for 35 of the team's 66. The dup threw up 33 of La Sierra's 63 shots from the field and experienced some mild success at points throughout the night when the Eagle defense had its breakdowns.
Â
For the Eagles,
Dakari Archer again demanded his usual attention by hitting the 20-point plateau for the second-straight night. He led the team with 20 points on 7of-13 shooting and also led the team with his six rebounds.
Â
A handful of his points came thanks to the tremendous ball distribution exhibited by
Ryan Swain in his 22 minutes. The junior racked up six assists to go with his eight points and five boards in a well-rounded night.
Â
It was a relatively quiet night for
Steve Herve, except for the fact that he was the source of half of Biola's offense during the game-clinching points streak. He made back-to-back layups for the Eagles and converted an and-one on his second opportunity to get the first five of the 10 points. Herve ended with 12 points and three boards as one of five Eagles to finish in double-digits.
Â
Jeff Gonzalez was another one of those Eagles in a performance that definitely impressed from start-to-finish. The long, lanky forward got big throughout the night and racked up 13 points on 5-of-6 shooting as he made his way to the rack through traffic time and time again.
Â
Terrell Funches and
Trevor Treinen were the others to hit double-digits. It was a huge triple from Treinen that accounted for the final three points of that 10-point run. It was the second time this season that the freshman has hit 10-plus points.
Â
Biola had quick hands in holding a steep advantage in steals at 10-6, but the Eagles also had trouble keeping the ball in their possession with 14 turnovers throughout the game.
Â
The win pushes Biola to 5-0 as it wins for the fifth time in eight games and hands Head Coach
Dr. Dave Holmquist his 896
th career coaching victory. The La Sierra team falls to 0-2. Biola is back on the court on Wednesday night as it will be the second half of a men's/women's home doubleheader against Pomona-Pitzer.
