Archer Shoots Arrows From Deep In Another Win

Dakari Archer was perfect from deep as Biola holds on for an 11-point win at Life Pacific.

Box Score SAN DIMAS, Calif. --- For the third time in four games this season Biola found itself on a road against a team playing a new program in its first home game. For the third time in those three tries the Eagles spoiled the grand opening. This time Biola hung a 69-58 win against the Life Pacific College Warriors.

The first half was a bit sloppy on both sides, but through it all a 45 percent shooting clip helped to lift Biola to a 34-21 advantage heading into the break.

A commanding performance from Dakari Archer was key to that advantage as the junior appears to have rebounded well after being slowed by injury. He hit three shots from beyond the arc in the first half, which included what was definitely the shot of the night.

Right before the Eagles inbounded the ball with 17 seconds left in the half Head Coach Dr. Holmquist told the guard to hold for his shot. He took the inbounds pass and dribbled the clock down at half court before streaking up to the three-point arc and stepping back to hit the buzzer beater.

This was the shot that was needed to quiet the Life Pacific crowd that was amped up all night long in support of the Warriors' first home game since 2007.

That crowd was roaring right before Archer hit that triple because just a minute earlier their big guard Sean Broker drained a three as he got fouled and did a fair share of celebrating on the court afterward.

The difference in the first half was the Eagles' 67 percent clip from three-point land. Biola made 4-of-6 from deep while limiting the Warriors to three makes from deep in significantly more chances.

Biola's defense, while it had a few holes, did a great job of holding LPC's 7-foot, nearly-300 pound center, Jimmy Roethler, to just two points in the first half.

The second frame saw the Eagles' regulars get a bit more rest and allowed Life Pacific to work its way back to the eventual 11-point deficit by outscoring Biola 37-35 in the half.

The Warriors shot nearly 50 percent from the field through the final 20 minutes and showed some bench depth by outscoring the Eagles' bench by four points.

Despite having two mammoths inside the Warriors continued to try and force the outside game, which resulted in two guards being their top two scorers with 15 of their combined 32 points coming from beyond the arc.

Steve Herve stepped up with some defense in the second half coming up with two of Biola's three blocks. He was also effective at drawing fouls inside as the Warriors' two bigs both got in foul trouble with one of them eventually fouling out.
Archer made another three three-point shots to finish the game 6-for-6 from deep as he compiled his team-high 22 points. He was 7-of-12 overall and got a chance to rest most of the second half in preparation for tomorrow night's game, which will be Biola's fifth in eight days.

The Eagles had four guys score in double digits. Joining Archer was Jeff Gonzalez (12), Ryan Swain (12) and Caelan Tiongson (10). The Eagles got a lot of those points off LPC turnovers as the Eagles scored 22 off givaways while the home team managed just nine.

The win improves Biola to 4-0 to start the season while LPC falls to 0-2. Holmquist earns his 895th career coaching victory as a result and has a chance to push to 896 at home on Saturday at 7:45 p.m.
