Box Score LA MIRADA, Calif. --- It was a bit slower buildup than it was out in the desert, but ultimately the end result was the same as Biola Men's Basketball kept its undefeated record with a 66-52 victory over Benedictine-Mesa. It marks the second time in the last four days the Eagles beat the Redhawks.
Â
"I thought it would be tougher tonight," said Head Coach
Dr. Dave Holmquist. "I thought that down the stretch we did some really good things at both ends of the floor and played our best defense. We had a couple sequences that I thought were just right and it made the difference."
Â
In Arizona the Eagles took advantage of a 32-point outburst from
Dakari Archer and 11 made three-point shots to hang a huge victory over Benedictine. The Redhawks made the key adjustments to avoid a repeat of that, but unfortunately for them
Steve Herve,
Caelan Tiongson and
Jeff Gonzalez went off from inside to completely change the game.
Â
The visiting team got off to a good shooting performance out of the gate while the Eagles struggled to immediately find the best method of attack against the new-look defense. This resulted in Benedictine-Mesa holding a lead as late as nine minutes into the game.
When a Tiongson layup tied the game at 13 the Eagles would never trail again. Â That was due in part to the seven-point lead that was built quickly as the home team made a 10-2 run during that frame.
Â
Tiongson had a fantastic outing with 11 points, eight rebounds, four assists and two blocks. He was a bug, physical presence off the bench that helped the Eagles' bench outscore the Redhawks' 22-16 over the 40 minutes.
Â
Biola maintained a 6-to-8 point lead throughout the rest of the half and went into the break with a 30-24 lead.
Â
Herve was the one that carried the team through the first half by showing tremendous touch under the basket and gobbling up rebounds like the cookie monster for the first 10-15 minutes of play. He ended the first half with eight points on 4-of-5 shooting and five boards, including three on the offensive end.
Â
Offensive rebounding was a big part of both teams' game tonight as Benedictine-Mesa split their 32 rebounds evenly at 16 on both ends and the Eagles also had nine offensive boards.
Â
Benedictine-Mesa found its shot in the beginning of the second half, which helped them get as close as three points as late as six minutes remaining in the game.
Â
Another 10-2 run for the Eagles got the game to 64-52 and put the Redhawks away for good despite their best attempts to slow down the Eagles' offense with late-game fouls.
Â
That tactic did not work as well for them because Biola shot 21-for-28 from the line in the game.
Trevor Treinen got his points at the line by going 7-for-8 in his four trips to the stripe. He had nine points on the night.
Â
Terrell Funches was the Eagles' leading scorer for the first time this season. He had been No. 2 in each of the previous two outings. He finished with 13 points on 5-for-10 shooting.
Â
"I think Trevor and Terrell both did well, but we also had a pretty good balance of five guys out there scoring some points and doing some good things," said Holmquist.
Â
Gonzalez was another strong scorer, providing some interior offense on a night when the Eagles were held to just one three-point make. He ended with nine points.
Â
The win pushes Biola to 3-0 on the young season and gets
Dr. Dave Holmquist to 894 career victories. Benedictine-Mesa falls to 0-2 with both losses coming at the hands of the Eagles.
Â
Biola is next in action on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. when it hosts La Sierra.
