Box Score MESA, Ariz. --- Biola Men's Basketball opened its 2015-16 season in familiar fashion as it won its season-opener over Benedictine-Mesa 84-60. The win keeps a remarkable streak alive as the Eagles have won every season-opener since the 1995-96 season.
Â
Dakari Archer was the story of the night as the junior guard went off for 32 points to lead the team to the decisive victory over the Redhawks. It's the first time in his three-year career with the Eagles that he's eclipsed 30, setting a new single-game best by breaking past the 27-point total that he previously set on Dec. 13 of last year.
Â
Archer made 10 shots from the floor and went 9-of-12 from the line in building his team-best point total. Three of his 10 makes were from distance including one sweet make on a fast break early in the second half.
Â
Just behind Archer in production was a newcomer.
Terrell Funches was Archer's buddy in the backcourt on this night and the two played well off each other to drain shots from start-to-finish.
Â
Funches made five shots from deep to keep the Eagles' running up the score and ended the night with an impressive Biola debut with 24 points. He had to get most of his points the hard way as he had just one chance from the line and went one-for-one.
Funches was one of the many dangerous deep threats for the Eagles on this night. Twelve of Biola's 27 makes from the floor were from behind the arc. That ties last year's season-high in a single-game.
Â
Biola exploded in the first half of this one by putting up 46 points through the first 20 minutes. That was the first 20 minutes in program history for this Benedictine squad. The Eagles held a 46-29 lead heading into the half.
Â
Jeff Gonzalez was the Eagles' third leading scorer with nine points in what was also his first game as an Eagle. He had one of the highlights of the night when he drained a triple from deep in the corner as one of his three makes from the field.
Â
The Redhawks also had two players reach double-digits with their leading scorer, Anthony Bryant, coming in at 16 total points.
Â
One area of improvement for Biola after what was a convincing victory would be free throw shooting. The Eagles went just 18-for-30 from the line, which is a bit of a dip from their 65 percent free-throw percentage from last season.
Â
They allowed the home team to make 23 attempts from the line, of which 16 were converted.
Â
Biola improves to 1-0 with the win and the Redhawks drop to 0-1. The Eagles remain in Arizona and are back in action Saturday against Embry-Riddle. It will also be the ERAU Eagles' first-ever men's basketball contest.
