Box Score PRESCOTT, Ariz. --- Through the first two outings of the 2015-16 season
Dr. Dave Holmquist's men's basketball team is outscoring its opponents by an average of 28.5 points-per-game in two big wins in the desert.
Â
Saturday afternoon saw the squad drop almost 100 points on a brand new Embry-Riddle team en route to a 95-62 road victory.
Â
The Eagles' did all that damage even without significant minutes from the guy who dropped 32 on the Benedictine-Mesa Redhawks last night,
Dakari Archer.Â
Â
While Archer score just three points in limited time on the court the story was the four men who found their way into double-digit scoring in a flourishing offensive display.
Â
Jeff Gonzalez was the Eagles' leading scorer on this day as he dropped 24 on the Arizonian Eagles. He was 5-for-6 from the line and sank a team-best three shots from beyond the arc.
Â
Following Gonzalez on the score sheet is
Terrell Funches. It is Funches' second day in a row as the Eagles' second leading scorer. The senior transfer hung a 19 on the board with 15 of them coming in the final 20 minutes.
Â
The Eagles led 47-29 at the halftime break and then added on with the amplified offense from Funches and Gonzalez in the final frame.
Â
Also reaching double-digits was
Caelan Tiongson, who ended the day with 16 points and even drained a three. He got to the line four times and made 75 percent of his attempts from there, but he did much of his damage from inside with five buckets coming in the paint.
Â
Freshman
Trevor Treinen was the final Eagle in double-digits. He made four of his field goal attempts, splitting two and two from inside and deep. He was also steady with his free throws, making 4-of-6.
Â
Free throw shooting made up a bit of the difference as Biola had four more made free throws on equal number of attempts as Embry-Riddle. The home team had half of the three-point makes as Biola (10-5), which also accounted for some of the points.
Â
Biola improves to 2-0 on the young season and comes back to California for its next action. The Eagles' home opener is this Tuesday night at 7:30 p.m. against that same Benedictine team they beat by 24 last night.
Â
This win marks 893 in the career of coach Holmquist.
