HIGHLIGHTS
LA MIRADA, Calif. --- The first half of basketball inside Chase Gymnasium on Tuesday night was a phenomenal display of defense, athletic offense and back-and-forth buckets. That came to a screeching halt in the final 20 minutes as Westmont shot 70 percent to make what was a two-point game into a 83-65 drubbing.
Â
The Warriors' high-powered offensive output was keyed by a three-point shot that was simply not a part of the Biola arsenal late in this one. Westmont dropped 15 total three-point field goals through the net, going 62.4 percent shooting from beyond the arc to force a scoring difference in an otherwise exciting contest. The Eagles' converted six fewer field goals, but 11 fewer three-pointers.
Â
While Westmont was strong throughout the second half, it was the way they began the period that scored them an insurmountable lead. The Warriors went on a 14-point run between 17:39 remaining and 12:54 remaining to grab a 16-point lead late in the game. That is two straight home games Biola has surrendered at least a 14-point run to its opponent.
Â
Cory Blau was instrumental to that run and the Warriors' big victory. He scored eight of those 14 points during the run, and he tallied a game-high 20 points on 3-of-4 shooting from deep. Sean Harman also made three triples for Westmont, and three other players made two to highlight the tremendous shooting display.
Â
Daniel Carlin was another key performer in the Warriors' second-half performance. He made 5-of-5 from the floor for 10 points in the half. He was 6-of-6 from the floor in the game. He's posted at least 11 points in each of the last three meetings between Biola and Westmont, dating back to last year.
Â
Despite the strond second half making the game look like a blowout, there were plenty of positives for the Eagles to take away, including a tremendous defensive outing from
Steve Herve, who posted three blocks and a steal.
Â
Also, strong inside scoring from
Mike Kurtz, who ended with 20 points, and
Grant Corsi, who had seven points on very impressive drives to the basket.
Dakari Archer and
Pierre Zook each tacked on 12 points in sound performances.
Â
Nothing the Eagles could have done on the offensive end could have helped them climb back after the three-point barrage and the fact that Westmont earned itself 10 extra possessions by outrebounding the Eagles 29-19.
Â
The loss is Biola's fifth in a row and drops the team to 13-8 (1-6 GSAC). Westmont, the top vote-getter outside of the NAIA Top-25 poll, improved to 14-6 (6-1 GSAC) with the victory.
Â
The Eagles host The Master's College (6-11, 1-6 GSAC) on Saturday night at 7:30 p.m.
