Box Score COSTA MESA, Calif. --- The first 10 minutes of this game were ultra-competitive, albeit not that fantastically played, but for the last 30 minutes it was much more of the same as Biola lost its fourth straight game. The Eagles lost 60-47 to Vanguard to fall to 1-5 in Golden State Athletic Conference play.
Â
The game was close throughout the first 10 minutes and 47 seconds, with the lead changing hands 10 times in that span. Biola seemed to be the team in control, claiming hold on that lead five of those times, with two tie scores and three Vanguard leads.
Â
Mike Kurtz scored five of the Eagles' first nine points as Biola took hold of its last lead of the game at 9-7 with 11:27 remaining in the first half. Kurtz had a very strong night throughout, rebounding after back-to-back ineffective outings.
Â
He finished with 14 points, 13 rebounds and a block to lead the Eagles on offense and defense.
Pierre Zook also had a strong outing from the field, going 4-of-8 for 11 points.
Â
However, despite the best efforts of those two, Vanguard finished off the first half with a 28-9 run that effectively buried any Biola chance of a comeback by building a 17-point lead at the break.
Â
The Lions were powered by the type of offense the Eagles struggled to get going effectively, the three-point field goal. Vanguard made 7-of-13 three-point shots in the first 20 minutes, including five of their last seven in the frame.
Â
After Vanguard extended the point differential to a game-high 23 points a minute and a half into the second half, the Eagles played them tough for the remainder of the game, outscoring the Lions 29-25 in the final 20 minutes.
Â
Dakari Archer was the stimulus to Biola's offense in that half, scoring 11 of his 13 points against a tiring Vanguard defense. He was 4-of-9 from the field in the second half after failing to make a single shot in the first.
Â
Vanguard's offense was a team attack, with five players scoring eight or more points. The team was led by DeAngelo Jones, who posted 15 points off three three-point makes and perfect free-throw shooting.
Â
The Lions improved to 12-8 (4-3 GSAC) following there fifth consecutive win at home. The Eagles' woes continue, dropping to 13-7 (1-5 GSAC) and falling under .500 on the road after beginning the year 3-0 away from Chase Gym.
They return to the home confines on Tuesday evening for a GSAC matchup with Westmont (13-6, 5-1 GSAC).
