Box Score IRVINE, Calif. --- It was almost if someone had hit the repeat button after Saturday night's blowout loss to No. 2 Hope International when Biola found itself down by 12 to No. 15 Concordia just inside 10 minutes into Tuesday night's game.
Â
While it did not score the first 17 points of the game, like the Royals' offense did on Tuesday, the Concordia offense got off to a fast start and did not let up as it took control of this Golden State Athletic Conference game to hand Biola a 88-62 loss.
Â
The 88 points surrendered tie the season-high for a Biola opponent and hand the Eagles their third loss in a row and fourth in five GSAC outings.
Â
Both teams shot well from the field in this one, but the home team benefitted from a large lead in number of offensive possessions. Biola turned the ball over to the Eagles of Irvine 21 times, setting a new season-high. Thirteen of those turnovers came from Biola's No. 1 and No. 2 guards, who both have a positive assist-to-turnover ratio this season, but suffered a terribly off night tonight.
Â
The pair of
Dakari Archer and
Pierre Zook made every effort to counteract these turnovers with some offense, leading the team with 17 and 11 points, respectively, but even their scoring was not enough to overcome the number of extra possessions gained by Concordia with its tremendous play on the glass. Concordia led with a plus-nine rebounding differential (40-31) with strong physical play.
Â
Stephen Grosey was the key player for the No. 15 Eagles, as he tallied 16 points and 15 points in a
Mike Kurtz-esque performance in the paint. Kurtz himself had his second-straight off night, playing in just 17 minutes of this one and recording just six points and two rebounds, 9.2 fewer than his season average.
Â
Biola looked to
Steve Herve to fill the rebounding void, and the freshman answered the call well. He brought down eight rebounds, to lead the team, and he had an OK night from the floor, shooting 2-of-4, as he had to focus most of his efforts on defense trying to find some way to slow down Concordia's blistering post offense.
Â
Once CUI got to the 12-point lead 10 minutes in there was no looking back. The hosts built to as much as a 26 point lead in the first half and maintained it throughout the second frame en route to a huge win solidifying their place at the top of the GSAC standings, while continuing the once-promising Biola squad's in-conference struggles.
Â
Things get no easier on Saturday when Biola (13-6, 1-4 GSAC) travels to "The PIT" to face the formerly No. 1-ranked Vanguard Lions (11-8, 3-3 GSAC).
