Box Score LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Biola was outplayed from the outset against No. 2 Hope International on Saturday night, as the Royals stormed out to a 17-0 lead in a nearly perfect first six and a half minutes.
Â
Eventually, the tide would even out in the first half as the two teams practically split points for the remainder of the first 20 minutes, but with that hot start the damage was done. The Royals would ride that big advantage throughout the contest, setting the Eagles confidence and composure low and cruising to a 65-40 win.
Â
The Royals improved to 15-0 (3-0 GSAC) and pushed Biola to another conference loss to drop the home team to 13-5 (1-3 GSAC).
Â
Hope Internation used a suffocating and powerful defense to create its own offense off takeaways, Biola turnovers and missed contested shots. Biola made only 14 shots from the field in the entire game, going just 31 percent from the floor, including a 25 percent mark in the blowout first half.
Â
The Royals shot 48 percent in the game, but it was a trio of athletic guards that set the tone and did most of the heavy lifting for them throughout the game. Garrett Neilan, Matt Green and Kenny Morgan went a combined 19-of-34 from the floor to combine for 49 of HIU's 65 points.
Â
Thirty of the Royals points came in the paint, outnumbering a less-than-satisfying performance inside by Biola, who could manage just 16 points inside. A lot of the Hope International points in the paint came in transition with the Royals totaling 15 fast break points and 14 points of Biola turnovers.
Â
It was an absolute mismatch at just about every position on the floor as the Royals brought size, speed and athleticism while the Eagles never found their groove offensively or defensively. While the Royals posted nine steals, the Eagles had just two takeaways in this one, four fewer than what they had been averaging entering play.
Â
Biola also had been averaging 71 points-per-game, making the season-low 40 points it scored tonight even more disappointing. The Eagles second line saw a lot of time on the court once the score go out of hand, resulting in
Blake Shannon, Jr. and
Jola Otubu leading the team in scoring at seven and six points, respectively.
Â
The good news is that one game will not make or break a season and Biola has a few days to prepare for its next Golden State Athletic Conference matchup. The Eagles travel to Irvine to take on No. 9 Concordia (15-3, 4-1 GSAC) on Tuesday.
