Box Score ATHERTON, Calif. --- It was definitely not the outcome the Eagles expected following their strong series against Vanguard, but after a 12-1 blowout loss to Menlo on Wednesday Biola finished its Atherton road trip with an 0-2 mark.
Menlo flexed its muscles early and often in this inopportunely scheduled non-conference contest.
Jimmy Gallarda was given the ball to start the game on the bump for the first time this season, and he was not fooling the Oaks at all.
He allowed six runs on six hits and a walk over the first two innings as Biola fell into a big 6-0 hole. Those runs did not come cheap for Menlo, as they came off a double, triple, two-run homerun and a sacrifice groundout.
Sean Rothfuss came in to relieve Gallarda and attempt to get the game back under control in the third inning. He handled the Oaks' bats well over his first two frames, and even got a run of run support from the Eagles' bats, leading to a 6-1 score headed into the bottom of the fifth.
Biola's lone run of the game came off a
Johnny Farrington RBI single that scored
Luke Klocek following a throwing error by Menlo's catcher.
The fifth inning sealed Menlo's runaway lead, as they tacked on five runs to knock Rothfuss out of the game and enhance their deficit to an insurmountable amount. They led by 10 runs headed into the sixth inning, and Biola entered this game just 1-8 when its opponent scores more than 10 runs.
Menlo was able to keep Biola off the board throughout the rest of the contest, and the Oaks tacked on one run of insurance to finish with the 12-1 victory. It was an unconventional course to victory for Menlo as the Oaks used nine different pitchers, none of who threw more than 2.1 innings on the mound.
Kyer Vega tossed 1.1 no-hit innings in the middle of the game to get the win and improve to 5-2, while Gallarda was saddled with the loss to drop to 0-1.
Biola falls to 14-37 and it will conclude its regular season with a three-game home set on Friday and Saturday against No. 7 San Diego Christian.
