Too Little, Too Late

Biola missed some opportunities along the way, and despite getting some huge hits fall 6-5.

Konanui Olson went five strong innings for the Eagles, but his start was overshadowed by a Menlo walkoff homerun.
Box Score ATHERTON, Calif. --- Biola had a great game against Menlo on Tuesday, but their efforts fell just short when John Bowling hit a solo smash over the left field fence in the bottom of the 10th inning to give the Oaks a 6-5 victory.

Biola was the superior team throughout most of the day as they smashed extra-base hits all over the park in order to get their five runs. The Eagles knocked nine hits on the afternoon, and nearly half of them were for more than one bag.

Their scoring got started almost immediately as Biola got a run to start up the scoreboard in the top of the second. Rob Groeschell led off the inning with a deep double, and he was pushed in by a Tanner Swire triple following a stolen base.

That lead was extended to two runs in the top of the fifth inning when Johnny Farrington singled down the line to score his brother Boone. Boone Farrington had walked earlier in the inning, one of the Eagles' 11 walks on the afternoon.

Konanui Olson got the call from Head Coach Jay Sullenger and twirled a fantastic game from the bump. He held the Oaks scoreless through four innings before he was tagged for one run in the fifth.

He got through the inning and ended his day with a five inning line and surrendered just four hits to Menlo.

"We got a good start out of Kona (Olson)," said Sullenger. "It was definitely his best start of the season, and he gave us a chance to win."

Bryan Castelli was the only Eagle to through in relief of Olson, and he tossed the remaining five innings of this extra-inning affair. He had a rough inning in the bottom of the seventh, surrendering four runs to put Biola behind for the first time in the contest. Four of the seven total hits he gave up came in that half-inning alone.

Boone Farrington came up with the huge hit that got Biola out of its 5-2 hole in the top of the eighth. He took Ryan Coonan deep in order to tie the game at five a piece and tack on his 19th, 20th and 21st RBI of the season.

"We played a good game and felt really good about our at bats," said Sullenger. "We were leading for most of the game, but then it took a big homerun from Boone to tie it up after we fell behind."

Castelli seemed to be settled into a groove late, as he was drawing a bunch of groundouts and notching a strikeout, but he threw one mistake that flew deep over the left field wall to give Menlo the walkoff win.

The game showed fight on both sides, but ultimately Menlo just outlasted the Eagles and took advantage of all of the opportunities they had to score. Biola could have added more runs and perhaps won the game if not for their 13 runners left on base.

"The game came down to us not executing when we got runners in scoring position," said Sullenger. "We took some real good at bats and put guys in a position to score and we just didn't execute in some key situations."

Biola falls to 14-36 following the loss, and the Oaks improved to 27-25. The two squads meet again tomorrow afternoon at 2:30 p.m. Follow live stats for that game here. Follow live video here.
