Box Score 2 LA MIRADA, Calif. –-- A wild first inning, which resulted in a game-one loss, mars an otherwise shutdown pitching performance by the Eagles throughout their doubleheader split against San Diego Christian. The Eagles dropped the first game 2-0 but bounced back in the nightcap, winning 3-0.
In a action-packed start, the Hawks scraped together two runs in the top of the first off a leadoff hit-by-pitch, a double, a fielder's choice, a steal, and Hannah Romanski's two-RBI hit.
Biola's starting pitcher,
CeCe Luster, seemed to settle in at the end of the first, with an inning-ending strikeout. However, a rough start to the second led Head Coach
Lorie Coleman to make a quick move to her ace,
Reba DePriest.
From the time DePriest came in until the final out in the second game, Biola's pitching was absolutely lights out. San Diego Christian mustered only one hit for the remainder of the afternoon. DePriest, the most-recent Golden State Athletic Conference pitcher of the week, made a great bid for another after fanning eight in the first game, and six in just three innings of work in the second game.
DePriest is now averaging a scorching 9.7 strikeouts per seven innings, and maintaining a miniscule 0.39 ERA in her first season with the Eagles.
"[DePriest] is pretty hard to beat," said Coleman. "I just wish we would have had the offense to really back her up a little bit more (in the first game)."
The Eagles' offense really did disappoint all day long, despite its three-run tally in game two. Josie Tucker went all 13 innings for San Diego Christian, and it took Biola until the fourth inning of game two to get anything going against her.
The Eagles were finally able to string hits together in the fourth inning of the season-series finale.
Celina Thornton and Luster brought home
Brooke Madrid and
Mackenzie Magro to widen the lead from one to three.
Brooke Madrid was a bright spot on the day for the offense, going 3-for-6 over the two games at the bottom of the order.
"I guarantee you by the time Saturday comes we will be in a lot better shape than we were today," said Coleman. "We will be working hard this week to see if we can put more runs together."
Saturday, the Eagles head to Costa Mesa to take on Vanguard. The Lions took down No. 1 Concordia for the second time this season as they split with the Eagles this afternoon. They are currently fourth in the conference standings, behind Concordia, Biola and San Diego Christian.
In order to further their cause in the GSAC standings, Biola could use plenty of offense, and perhaps some help from their mascot Eleanor, in Saturday's doubleheader.
