Box Score 2 EL CAJON, Calif. --- Baseball's struggles continued on Saturday as the team put up just two runs while getting swept in a doubleheader at No. 22 San Diego Christian.
Â
The two losses today put the Eagles at the lowest point of the season as the team has now lost seven straight games, mostly due to its continual inability to push runs across home plate. The Eagles currently have the second-fewest runs scored in the conference despite playing the second-most games.
Â
Today the offensive woes continued and put the Eagles at a significant disadvantage against a Hawks team that put up 16 runs in the 16 innings played at SDC Field. San Diego Christian earned a 5-0 win in the opening contest of the doubleheader and dropped 11 runs on the Eagles in the second game to complete the series-sweep with an 11-2 victory.
Â
Eric Diomartich got the call in the early game for Biola, and was keeping the Eagles in the game with a strong outing, especially in the early innings.
Â
He was matching SDC's starter, Gabriel Hemmer, step-for-step through the first three innings as he kept the Hawks scoreless.
Â
The Eagles had plenty of chances to score before SDCC could get on the board, but they stranded five runners on base before the Hawks were able to break open the scoring with a run in the bottom of the fourth inning.
Â
Biola left
Rob Groeschell on base in the top of the fifth, before Chad Erickson broke the game wide open with a three-run jack in the bottom of the frame.
Â
Once the Hawks extended the lead to that point, there was simply no looking back as they cruised to the win in the opener.
Â
"Dio threw a good ballgame for us, but their guy also pitched really well," said Head Coach
Jay Sullenger. "We had some opportunities to score early in that game, but we just could not do it. It was a good ballgame throughout, but we just made a couple of mistakes."
Â
While the second game may appear to be a complete blowout, it too was a fairly competitive affair, except for the Hawks' six-run third inning.
Â
Johnny Farrington gave Biola an early lead in the game with a two-RBI double in the top of the second inning. This was Biola's first lead since the first inning of their second game against Vanguard on Tuesday.
Â
The slim advantage made it through the second frame unharmed, but could not withstand the six runs that San Diego Christian manufactured in a huge third inning. They got six of their 15 hits in that inning, and used two doubles to help move their many baserunners around the pond.
Â
"This game seemed to be over after their big third inning," said Sullenger. "We were fighting uphill and just couldn't get anything going against their guy late in the game."
Â
The outburst of offense forced
Jesse Yancosek out of the game and required that Sullenger get tricky with his bullpen usage yet again.
Â
He ended up using four pitchers over the course of the seven-inning contest and saw three of them surrender at least two earned runs.
Â
After the early noise from Farrington, the Eagles' bats went silent as David Johnson settled into a groove and pitched six strong innings on the way to his third win of the season. The loss was Yancosek's fourth of the year.
Â
Biola got 10 total hits on the day, with six of them coming courtesy of the Farrington brothers.
Boone Farrington had two hits in each contest to bump his season batting average up to .292.
Â
The losses drop Biola to 8-20 (4-13 GSAC) on the season, and San Diego Christian improves to 20-7 (12-5 GSAC). The two teams are on opposite ends of the conference table as Biola drops to last place and the Hawks sit just a half a game out of first place.
Â
The Eagles will look to turn the streak upside down with a win at Vanguard on Monday.
