Box Score 2 LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Entering play on Saturday Biola had a chance to do something it has not accomplished since Feb. 7, win back-to-back games. While the Eagles could not pull that off, after losing game one 6-4, they were able to win their series against Arizona Christian with a 12-11 game two win.
Â
The series win is Biola's first since it took two of three from Westmont in the second Golden State Athletic Conference series back in January. The two wins in the series help the Eagles improve to 11-31 (7-20 GSAC), and they end Biola's season-series with ACU at 3-3.
Â
"On the weekend we really gloved it well, so guys did a good job with that," said Head Coach
Jay Sullenger. "It was a good weekend. This is our second weekend that we've won, so we need to celebrate that. It has been a long year, so it is good to get a weekend series."
Â
The day did not start out great for the Eagles, as they surrendered four runs to the Firestorm immediately in the top of the first inning in the opener. It was the first time that
Eric Diomartich gave up more than three earned runs in an inning since his first start of the season.
Â
"A lot of times when you give up big innings it will cost you the game, and that is what happened there," said Sullenger.
Â
The Eagles' bats did not seem to be in the game against ACU's starter Sam Landes until they were able to grab one run off of him in the second following a walk and a few two-out singles.
Â
They notched three more over the next three innings to tie the game at four, and Diomartich began to settle into a groove, retiring 13 straight batters between the end of the first and the end of the fifth innings.
Â
That streak came to an unfortunate end when Cody Rose led off the sixth inning with a homerun to put the Firestorm up by one.
Â
Two quick groundouts followed the big fly, and it seemed like Diomartich would shake off the run and settle back into his groove. Unfortunately ACU was able to get a two-out double, followed by an RBI single to push their advantage to 6-4, where it would stay.
Â
"We dug a hole early," said Sullenger. "Dio has been throwing well for us, but he just had a rough first inning. We were able to hang with them and he was able to keep us in the game. They got to him in the sixth and we just couldn't put any more together."
Â
Game two was a circus of a ball game that saw more runs put on the board than in any other Biola game this season, with 23 runs coming in just seven innings.
Â
It was a walkoff win for Biola as, after getting ahead 10-4 on the Firestorm, the Eagles allowed ACU to tie the game at 11 and needed a walkoff knock by
Tanner Swire to earn their win.
Â
It was an absolute slugfest as both teams put 14 hits on the board, and each team utilized at least four pitchers on the afternoon.
Â
The Eagles got sound performances at the plate from
Rob Groeschell,
David McNeill,
Luke Klocek,
Michael Annunziata,
Andrew Frank and
Sam Thorne, who each had two hits in the game.
Andres Rodriguez also continued his strong weekend, going 1-for-2 with two walks and two runs scored.
Â
"Andres, with Boone (Farrington) getting hurt, had an opportunity to slide in the lineup, and he took advantage of it," said Sullenger. "He had a great weekend with the glove, turned some great double plays, and he also swung the bat well."
Â
After the Eagles gave up two runs to the Firestorm in the top of the sixth inning, they had just six outs to work with in order to secure the weekend-series win. Despite getting a runner two third base, they had nothing going in the sixth, so it all came down to their last hacks.
Â
A
Johnny Farrington double opened the inning, and then he was moved to third by a single from McNeill. An intentional walk to Annunziata loaded the bases with no outs for Swire. He hit a ground ball to the second baseman, who had no play at the plate and ended the game with a putout at second base that allowed the winning run to score.
Â
"It was good to swing the bats," said Sullenger. "We let them back in it, but we did enough to win it at the finish."
Â
Biola has a good chunk of time to celebrate their winning weekend as they prepare for a matchup with CSU San Marcos on April 8.
