Box Score 2 LANCASTER, Calif. --- The possibility of taking home two solid road wins faded very quickly on Tuesday afternoon, as the University of Antelope Valley exploded for three runs in the first inning played and asserted their offensive firepower on Biola.
Â
The Eagles and Pioneers met for one full game and to conclude a game that was suspended at an 8-8 tie earlier this season.
Â
The Pioneers got the ball rolling quickly with three runs off of
Bryan Castelli in the opening inning of the makeup game, the top of the eighth.
Â
The Eagles were able to get one hit, but not much of anything else as they went down quickly and ended the game with an 11-8 loss.
Â
Game two was a solid pitching duel between
Sean Rothfuss and Bobby Diaz, the winner of the first game. Rothfuss had one of his strongest outings of the season by going six innings and giving up just one earned run.
Â
"Of anything today that you could say we did well, we threw strikes," said Head Coach
Jay Sullenger. "Sean pitched a really good game for us, and Bryan didn't do bad himself, we just misplayed some balls behind him."
Â
Rothfuss' strong outing was match and then some by Ruiz, who threw a complete game and allowed just one run to the Eagles in an eventual 3-1 win.
Â
Biola's lone score tied the game at one in the sixth inning, as
David McNeill doubled home
Boone Farrington to pick up his 18
th RBI and sixth extra-base hit of the season.
Â
Ruiz was solid in each of the other eight innings, allowing only five hits to the Eagles and tacking on two strikeouts. He was able to pitch to contact and force Biola's hitters to hit into outs.
Â
"He kept us off balance," said Sullenger. "He didn't throw anything by us. He was just a classic lefty who did a great job mixing speeds. Definitely a lot of credit to him, but at the same time we are responsible for making adjustments."
Â
The adjustments clearly did not get made where they needed to be made today, and a result Biola gets the long drive home from Lancaster to think about its two losses and Diaz gets two wins.
Â
The Eagles drop to 9-30 after the loss, and they have just 15 games left to try and right the ship. UAV improved its record to 21-14 and won its seventh straight game.
Â
Biola's season continues with some action against Arizona Christian at Eagles Diamond this Friday and Saturday.
Â
"Well, I wish I could say there was a magic formula here for the finish," said Sullenger. "But we are just going to try and take care of the baseball, manufacture runs and continue to throw strikes. The fundamentals of the game never change. We are going to get back to the fundamentals and examine who we are."
Â
We will see what they learned on Friday afternoon.
