Saturday Sweep

Westmont used some dominant pitching to set down Biola in back-to-back games Saturday to finish the sweep.

Biola did a lot of watching pitches go past for strikes on Saturday afternoon, striking out 11 times in the early game.
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 SANTA BARBARA, Calif. --- Whenever anything grows or adjusts there is a period of growing pains or difficult times, and that is just what is happening with Biola baseball this season.

The Eagles continued to fight through a difficult, uncharacteristic season on Saturday in two losses at Westmont. The Eagles offense was again a cause for concern as it scratched out just one run in the doubleheader and failed to bring runners home when it had the opportunity.

Westmont took advantage of the Eagles' offensive woes in order to get the 9-0 win in game one and the late 3-1 win in the nightcap.

"We are getting tested as a group, and as anyone who has been tested knows, we are learning about ourselves," said Head Coach Jay Sullenger. "Things are good whenever everyone is good, but we are not good right now. We are working through some growing pains."

Russell Harmening took complete advantage of those growing pains in the first game, as he cruised to a second win of the season over Biola by pitching eight shutout, one-hit, innings. He exceeded his accomplishments from his first start against Biola where he went eight, five-hit, innings.

"Their starter pitched great. Harmening shut us down," said Sullenger.

The Eagles had one chance to score in the game, coming in the fourth inning. They got two runners on with no one out after a Westmont error and a single from Boone Farrington.

David McNeill absolutely battled through a gritty 10-pitch at bat, but ultimately fell short by hitting into a double play. It was yet another battle that Biola had to see go the wrong way, much as things have been going all season long.

Game two was slightly more competitive as the Eagles were able to get on the board right away with a run coming in the top of the first inning.

Farrington was right in the middle of the action again as he got a triple to begin the offense. He later came in because of a defensive mishap on a Michael Annunziata batted ball.

That was it for the scoring in the first inning, but the triple saw Farrington extend his hitting streak to 13 games.

Jesse Yancosek got the call by Sullenger and stepped up with a great start. He went five innings, and he really did not run into any kind of trouble with Westmont until the fourth inning, when a single, steal and double led to the Warriors game-tying run. It was Yancosek's first "quality start" since Feb. 22 against Concordia.
"Yank pitched very well and we just did not get him the runs," said Sullenger. "The guys battled, but the efforts fell short."

The Eagles had a chance to tack on some more in the sixth inning when they got Westmont's starter, Alex Bush, on the ropes by getting runners on the corners with just one out.

Nothing came to fruition and Biola fell behind in the bottom half of that frame and get blanked in the seventh to drop to 9-28 (5-19 GSAC). The Warriors completed a sweep of the Eagles to improve to 20-12 (11-11 GSAC).

The Eagles will have a chance to shake off the rust and get back in the win column as they face the University of Antelope Valley for two games on Tuesday, in Lancaster, Calif.
