Box Score SANTA BARBARA, Calif. --- It was another bleak day on the diamond for Biola baseball, until the Eagles began to catch some breaks in the top of the ninth inning when it was too late.
Â
The Eagles' offense was sputtering all day long as it failed to put anything together off Westmont's starter, Torin Shaikh.
Â
Shaikh went seven innings, throwing near-shutout ball as Biola could only pick up one run off a bobbled ball by Westmont's second baseman in the top of the sixth.
Â
Garrett Picha got the call for the Eagles in the series-opener and shutdown the Warriors through the first three innings before they began to get their timing down in the fourth inning.
Â
"Their guy did a good job, not a great one," said Head Coach
Jay Sullenger. "He did do good enough to outduel Picha."
Â
They put up five runs over the next three innings and Biola quickly found itself in a 5-1 hole, and Picha found himself in danger of a loss.
Â
Biola got some scattered base runners over the seventh and eighth innings, but they could not push any across, keeping with the theme of the season.
Â
It took some luck and some control-free pitching by the Warriors for Biola to find itself back in the game in the top of the ninth.
Â
Back-to-back walks followed by a
Rob Groeschell single got Biola its second run of the game and set up two runners on base for
Tanner Swire. Swire and McCarrell both got retired, and things looked even bleaker as Biola still trailed by four with two outs.
Â
Three walks, two hits and a wild pitch later the Eagles had themselves a tie ballgame before an inning-ending groundout.
Â
"It was more a product of their mistakes than anything we did," said Sullenger. "They didn't have much of a bullpen and ran out of arms toward the end to barely hold on."
Â
The Warriors got a leadoff triple that scored quickly after two intentional walks loaded the bases. The 7-6 walkoff win tied the season-series at two wins a piece and improved Westmont's record to 18-12 (9-11 GSAC).
Â
"The triple went right off of Groeschell's glove," said Sullenger. "It was a diving effort that would have been a great catch, like one he's made a lot of this season."
Â
The Eagles fall to 9-26 (5-17) and will have a chance to move into the double-digit win total with a double-header at Westmont tomorrow at noon.Â
