Doubled Up

Biola gives up 11 runs to APU in the first five innings and can only get five of its own all game.

David McNeill had a two-RBI double and scored a run as one of the most productive Eagles of the game.
Box Score AZUSA, Calif. --- It was not an enjoyable night at the ballpark on Wednesday as Biola quickly fell 11 runs behind to Azusa Pacific on the road, and eventually fell 11-5 to the Cougars.

APU batted around their lineup in the first inning, getting off to a hot start against Sean Rothfuss. The Cougars got four runs off of five hits in the first inning after the Eagles were retired 1-2-3 early.

Since the Eagles have three more games this week Rothfuss had to stick around and attempt to straighten out his performance to save Biola's bullpen.

Unfortunately for the Eagles, he was unable to fully fall into form and gave up at least one run in each of the four innings he worked. His four-inning outing resulted in an eight-run advantage four the Cougars headed into the fifth frame.

The Eagles were blanked again in the fifth inning before APU broke the game wide open with three runs in the bottom of the fifth to put themselves way out of reach of Biola at 11-0.

As the game drew on the Eagles were able to put themselves in a little better position. They were hitless against Adam McCreery through the first five innings, but finally got on the junior lefty in the sixth.

Three straight walks got the inning going for Biola and loaded the bases for David McNeill. He hit a deep double to score two runs and put himself and Johnny Farrington on second and third.

A pitching change went awry for the Cougars as Head Coach Paul Svadis' new pitcher quickly gave up a three-run shot to Boone Farrington as he brought the Eagles within six and had his hitting streak hit double-digits.

That would be all she wrote on either side as two pitchers on each side combined to keep runs off the board over the final three and a half innings. The hits from McNeill and Farrington were the only two the Eagles got on the board all night long.

The loss drops Biola to 9-25 on the season and helps Azusa Pacific improve to 15-6 in their 2014 campaign.

Biola gets back to Golden State Athletic Conference play with a road series at Westmont this weekend.
