SANTA BARBARA, Calif. --- It was all or nothing night for all of the teams in the Golden State Athletic Conference as the schools all jostled for prime playoff positioning headed into next week's conference tournament.
Â
Biola and Westmont went head-to-head in a matchup that was especially crucial to the conference standings thanks to the extreme parity among the teams on the men's side.
Â
A Biola win meant a chance for a three-way tie at 7-7 in conference play. A Biola loss meant the possibility for a four-way tie at 6-8 in the conference.
Â
Low and behold, the Warriors were able to complete the upset victory over the Eagles, 65-60, and Concordia and The Master's also lost to put four teams tied for fourth place at two games under the .500 mark.
Â
In the early going it seemed as if the game was meant to be all about Biola executing its dominance, as the Eagles jumped out to a 15-3 advantage after the first five minutes.
Â
Granted, the big lead was partially due to the fact that Westmont was only able to sink two of its first 15 attempts from the floor. That trend changed quickly though, as the Warriors swiftly turned the game completely around with a 20-6 run that gave them a four point lead in the middle of the half.
Â
Daniel Carlin and Mantas Drungys scored more than half of the Warriors points over that stretch as Westmont worked to get the Eagles, and the crowd, back under its control.
Â
Biola held the game close at the end of the first half, until it was outscored 5-2 in the final minute to give the Warriors a six-point lead at halftime on its senior night.
Â
Christopher Miller caught fire in the first few minutes of the second half to help Westmont build its lead to a 12-point advantage that began to seem unreachable for the Eagles.
Â
Miller would go on to lead all scorers with 30 points and 10 rebounds as he worked his way to a career night.
Â
Biola did not give up any hope as it continued to fight to get back into the game, aided by some sharpshooting by
Pierre Zook.
Â
The Eagles did not have any absolute dominant runs in the second half, but did outscore the Warriors 19-12 over the middle 10 minutes, and were within five points as the game entered its final five minutes of play.
Â
Unfortunately for Biola, it had to play without one of its starters,
Dakari Archer, who went down early in the game with injury after a hard drop to the floor.
Â
Archer could have offered another scoring option as the Eagles' shooting went cold over the final minute and they failed to lessen the deficit in the losing effort.
Â
A glaring weakness to Biola's effort on Saturday night was its performance at the free-throw line. The Eagles shot just a hair better than 50 percent in the few times they were able to draw a foul.
Â
Biola also got outrebounded by seven, which is rare this season as Biola ranks in the top four in the conference in rebounding. The loss of possessions on the offensive end really cost the Eagles, as they could have made up the gap due to their higher shooting percentage.
Â
Pierre Zook led Biola with 12 points.
Andre Murillo was the only other Eagle to reach double-digits with 10. Murillo, normally a stud on the glass, was held to just four rebounds.
Â
Despite the loss, the Eagles earned the No. 4 seed in the conference and will host Westmont for a rematch at Chase Gym on Thursday at 7:30 p.m.
