Box Score 1 |
Box Score 2 PHOENIX, Ariz. --- Biola had a chance to even its season record at seven wins and seven losses on Saturday. However, things did not go as planned as the Eagles dropped both games of an early-morning doubleheader with Arizona Christian.
Â
Jesse Yancosek got the call in the early game for Head Coach
Jay Sullenger.
Â
His offense got him some early run support with a run in each of the first two innings. The offense was able to load the bases in the first, thanks to the wild throwing of ACU's starter, Tommy Lay.
Â
Once
David McNeill had a chance in the box, runners filled the bases, and Lay could still not hit the strikezone, walking in the first run of the game.
Â
ACU tacked one on Yancosek's line in the bottom of the first, using a sacrifice fly to score Trevor Santor after the senior left-fielder put himself on third base with a one-out triple.
Â
The Eagles covered that run up with their second score of the game, putting a single tally on the board in inning two.
Bryan Castelli scored his third run of the season on a
Johnny Farrington sacrifice fly.
Â
Yancosek's big mistake came in the fourth inning, when he gave up a two-run big fly to Phil Creecy. It was the first homerun he has surrendered this season, he also gave up his first triple of the year in this outing.
Â
He eventually lasted just 4.1 innings and had to be replaced by
Sean Rothfuss and
Tyler Bernheisel, who combined to shutout the Firestorm after Yancosek allowed their five runs.
Â
Biola tacked on a run in the eighth, but couldn't manage much else in the box as they fell 5-3 to the Firestorm.
Â
Game two of the doubleheader was much more of a nailbiter, as the Eagles and Firestorm held each other scoreless for nine innings of what was scheduled to be a seven-inning affair.
Â
Biola got a big-time start out of
Eric Diomartich, who was absolutely spot-on over the course of his eighth shutout innings. The big lefty held the Firestorm absolutely useless as he struck out nine and allowed just five hits, facing 30 batters.
Â
After
Bryan Castelli took the ball in the ninth it was more of the same, until the Firestorm was able to walk it off with a two-out run in the bottom of the 10
th inning. A leadoff single turned into the game-winning run for ACU as they took game two to improve to 3-6 on the season.
Â
They got a masterful performance out of their starter, Dean Jackson. The sophomore stayed on the mound from start to finish, to get credit for the win in 10 innings pitched.
Â
Rob Groeschell got two hits in game two, making him the only Eagle to have a multiple-hit performance on the day. Their offense continues to struggle, pushing across just eight runs over the course of this three-game series.
Â
Biola falls to 5-9 (3-6 GSAC) instead of the 7-7 they had hoped to be when the day was through.
Â
They resume play on Friday as they open a three-game series against CSU San Marcos. They host the Cougars on Friday and travel to San Marcos for a Saturday doubleheader.
