Box Score PHOENIX, Ariz. --- It was a rough go for Biola on Tuesday night, as they just could not muster enough points to keep up with Arizona Christian's high-scoring offense and talented guard, Talib Uqdah.
Â
The Firstorm rained on the parade of the Eagles, who earlier in the day received news that they had broken into the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics top 25 poll.
Â
The No. 18 Eagles suffered their ninth loss of the season, and third of conference play by losing to Arizona Christian, 89-77.
Entering the night, Biola seemed untouchable in Golden State Athletic Conference competition, winning three straight games and five of seven overall.
Â
The Firestorm was able to consistently nail the big shots when it needed to throughout the night in order to sink the Eagles' hopes of a road upset.
Â
Uqdah led all players by having a remarkable 35-point outburst for ACU. He was crucial in the first half, scoring 20 points and helping ACU to a slim five-point lead at the halftime break.
Â
Both teams got off to a very slow start, combining for only 18 points through the first seven minutes, but they each turned it on for the end of the half, and ended up with decent scoring numbers.
Â
Both teams shot nearly 50 percent from the floor in the first half, including a combined 12 mad three-pointers. Those deep scores helped the teams bring the scoring up to a respectable level.
Â
Andre Murillo was the only player to reach double-digits for Biola in the first half. He tallied 11 after going 5-9 from the field.
Â
The Eagles saw a sharp decline in their three-point shooting ability in the second half, while ACU turned up the heat by draining 63 percent of their shots in the second frame. They added five three-pointers while shooting 56 percent from beyond the arc.
Â
Their solid shooting helped them to a big five-minute 14-2 run that broke the game wide open with less than eighth minutes left to play. They only missed one shot from the floor during that entire scoring stretch.
Â
A few key blocks and tight defense against the Eagles also aided the Firstom's ability to pull away.
Â
The Eagles' offense did as much as it could to stay in the game from then on out, and even limited themselves to just 10 turnovers throughout the contest, but nothing was good enough to overcome the Firestorm's advantage.
Â
Murillo ended up leading the Eagles with 23 points. He was followed by
Pierre Zook, who notched 19, his 11
th 15-plus point output of the season and third in the last four games.
Â
Dakari Archer and
Mike Kurtz also scored in double-digits in the losing effort.
Â
No. 18 Biola falls to 14-9 (4-3 GSAC) and the Firstorm improves to 17-5 (3-4 GSAC). Biola hosts Vanguard this Saturday night at 7:30 p.m. It will be a Biola "Red Sea Night" as all fans are encouraged to wear red.
