Saturday Split

Biola takes one of two against No. 8 Concordia in a high-scoring Golden State Athletic Conference doubleheader.

Jimmy Gallarda scored twice on a day when Biola took all the runs it could get. He ups his season run total to three.
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 LA MIRADA, Calif. --- A runaway win in Saturday's game two was a sweet conclusion to what was a very disappointing series for Biola against No. 9 Concordia.

While the Eagles of Irvine took two out of the three games over the two-day series, it was a 7-1 win in the nightcap on Saturday afternoon that helps Biola walk away with its confidence back.

It was a six-run sixth inning that keyed the Eagles' 7-1 win in the second ballgame. It was an outpouring of offense that was very much welcomed by Head Coach Jay Sullenger.

"We took better at bats as the weekend went on," said Sullenger. "Hopefully that is something we can continue to do. We have been seeing better at bats as the season continues."

It was a pitcher's dual in throughout the second game, remaining tied at one run a piece from the top of the fourth inning on.

It was the 11-batter, seven-hit, six-run inning in the sixth that propelled the Eagles, and winning pitcher Bryan Castelli, to a win.

Andrew Frank started the inning with a single to the shortstop. Sam Thorne was plunked and both runners moved up a base after a Boone Farrington single.

Concordia made a pitching change, but it definitely did not help.

Luke Klocek got hit by a pitch, which scored Frank as the go-ahead run. David McNeill kept his run production alive with a two-RBI single through the left side. A Jimmy Gallarda walk was followed by a Tanner Swire single that scored two runs.

Johnny Farrington and Rob Groeschell became the eighth and ninth consecutive hitters to reach base with back-to-back singles, and then Andrew Frank helped the Eagles go full-circle when he hit an RBI single.

A double play by CUI ended the inning, but not before it went down as the most productive frame of the season for Biola.

Castelli went on to pick up the win, his first of the season, as he retired the side in the top of the seventh.

Pitching was what kept Biola in the ballgame, as they got a solid start from Jesse Yancosek and a big finish from Castelli. Yancosek threw the first 5.2 innings, giving up just one run on four hits, and Castelli had a perfect final 1.1 innings.

"That was definitely the best start that Yanc has thrown this season. He had a great fall, and he has not been the same guy since, but he was that guy today," said Sullenger. "Bryan has been successful in almost all of his outings. He almost always gets the outs, and I always feel good about giving the ball to him."

Game one was a tough one for Biola, as they allowed 15 hits to Concordia and got just three runs off 11 hits of their own in a 10-3 loss.

"The first ballgame was a struggle. We did not play good baseball, but we did get better as we went," said Head Coach Jay Sullenger. "Sage (Poland) did a good job to keep us in the ballgame. We brought in our ground ball guy, and they just found a way to hit it in the holes."

Poland came into the game in the fourth inning after a tough start by Sean Rothfuss, who gave up six runs on nine hits. He went four innings and gave up just four hits and one earned run as he fought to keep the Eagles in the game. Gallarda and Konanui Olson also saw some time on the mound at the end of the ballgame.

Ultimately the loss goes to Rothfuss, who drops to 2-2 on the season. Andrew Brooks went six stron innings for CUI, improving to 3-2 on the year with his win.

The offense showed heart and resilience by putting up their three runs in the latter innings after already trailing by six.

The split moves Biola to 8-13 (4-8 GSAC) and pushes No. 8 CUI to 15-6 (7-5 GSAC). The two teams meet again later in the year for three games at Concordia.

"We went 2-2 this week, and hopefully we can start turning the corner," said Sullenger. "A few winning weeks and we will be going in the right direction."

Biola's next opportunity to keep the ball rolling in the right direction comes on Monday, when they have a road matchup with Azusa Pacific at 5 p.m. That game will kick off a string of six contests for the Eagles next week.
