Box Score LA MIRADA, Calif. --- A rough week continued for the Eagles, as they dropped their second straight game after last Saturday's upset win over No. 9 Vanguard. Biola was unseated after a 79-74 loss to last-place The Master's College.
Â
TMC's incredible shooting in the first half proved to be all the difference they would need in the upset win over the Eagles.
The Mustangs shot nearly 60 percent from the floor in the first frame, and they were absolutely money from beyond the arc, draining seven three-pointers in the first 20 minutes.
Â
The whole gym was stunned when TMC jumped out to a huge 13-point advantage heading into halftime.
Â
The fact that Biola was shooting less than 30 percent from the floor and not winning the rebound battle definitely did not help the cause of the No. 22 Eagles.
Â
The second half saw the two squads even out as Biola was able to outshoot The Master's and limit their ability to get open looks from outside.
Â
It still seemed to be a lost cause as the game progressed and Biola found itself down by as much as 11 in the final minute and a half of the game.
Â
The Eagles most-prominent guards,
Dakari Archer and
Pierre Zook, shined in the limelight of the last minute and a half, draining 5-of-7 deep three-pointers through that last stretch of basketball.
Â
The home team was able to reinvigorate the crowd by cutting the deficit to just three points with 14 seconds left on the clock, but TMC worked on improving its ability to make free throws in the stretch run and held on for its eventual five-point win.
Â
"Down the stretch we made some nice shots and did some good things, but we were just behind too far at that point to close the gap completely," said Head Coach
Dr. Dave Holmquist.
Â
Biola was able to lessen the gap in the shooting percentages with its strong second half, getting within 13 percent of The Master's. However, the Eagles were unable to make up ground in the rebounding race, and that kept them with too few possessions to create the offense necessary to squeak out a win.
Â
Zook went off from deep, especially in the second half, and ended up with eight made three-point shots and 30 points, leading both sides in both of those categories.
Â
Archer tacked on 18 points of his own, and
Mike Kurtz notched 16 with 10 rebounds and two blocks.
Derrick Fain led the Mustangs with 20 points.
Â
The loss drops Biola to an even 5-5 in Golden State Athletic Conference play and helps the Mustangs improve to 4-6. The Eagles loss drops them out of a tie with Concordia for second place in the conference. and moves them into a tie for third with Arizona Christian. Both of those teams won their second game of the week.
Â
The Eagles hit the road twice next week, to face No. 13 Concordia on Tuesday night and Hope International on Saturday.
