Dropped Outs

Fielding was a big issue for the Eagles, who suffered from four errors on their way to two losses.

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 SAN MARCOS, Calif. --- Through the first few weeks of the Eagles' 2014 baseball season, it has consistently been a story about taking one step forward and two steps back.

That trend continued on Saturday afternoon, as Biola dropped the final two games of a three-game set with No. 16 CSU San Marcos. The 11-4 and 6-5 losses come just one day after Biola ran over the Cougars with a 10-3 victory.

Game one was riddles with errors, as Biola committed four fielding mishaps to ruin a mediocre start from Eric Diomartich. Diomartich allowed four runs to the Cougars right off the bat, but three of them were unearned as they came after an error with one out.

The tone was set for that contest, as the Eagles found themselves in an immediate hole that they were never able to dig out of. A double, wild pitch and single in the second scored CSUSM's fifth run of the contest; the run that eventually went down as the game-winning run.

Biola's best attempt at offense in game one came in the sixth inning. Back-to-back walks to leadoff the inning helped setup two potential RBI when Sean McCarrell came up to the plate. He singled and plated two of the Eagles' eventual four runs. Biola's other RBI came off the bat of Rob Groeschell.

The Cougars' pitching staff combined to hold Biola to just three hits throughout the ballgame, and their starter, Hunter Brown, improved to 2-1 after going 5.1 strong innings.

Besides the lack of offense, the real story in game one was Biola's ineptitude in the field. The team committed a season-high four errors, lowering the team fielding percentage to .972 on the season.

"We could not catch in the first one," said Head Coach Jay Sullenger.

Game two went much better for the Eagles, but still not well enough to squeeze out a series victory.

Biola was the team to get off to the fast start in the afternoon contest, scoring three runs over the course of the first two innings. Groeschell got the ball rolling in the first inning, singling to leadoff the game. He rode the merry-go-round to get to third base for Boone Farrington. The senior hit a single between the third baseman and shortstop and scored the first run to put BU ahead.

Groeschell was in on the action in the second inning as well, walking to setup a bases-loaded scenario for Michael Annunziata. Annunziata hit one right back up the middle to score two runs and give Biola's starter, Jesse Yankosec, a solid 3-1 advantage to work with.

The lead held up until CSUSM plated one in the bottom of the third and fourth innings, and all of a sudden the seven-inning contest was knotted up headed into the fifth.

The Cougars were able to knock one more around in the fifth, giving them at least one run scored through four of the first five innings, to take the 4-3 lead. CSUSM was wild again, walking Johnny Farrington and Groeschell to start the sixth inning. Boone Farrington took advantage of it with a huge go-ahead double to put the Eagles up 5-4 late in the game.

"Game two was a good ballgame," said Sullenger. "Execution was a part of that, we got a big hit in the sixth from Boone Farrington."

It was not Biola's day though, as they saw the Cougars nab a sacrifice fly and RBI double in the bottom of that same inning to secure the 6-5 win.

Bryan Castelli (0-2) got saddled with the loss after giving up two runs in his 1.1 inning of relief work.

"We did not play poorly in the second game, we just did not do enough to win," said Sullenger.

The Eagles fall to 6-11 on the season after the crushing losses, and the Cougars improved to 5-8.

Biola returns to the diamond on Monday afternoon for a home contest against Corban at 2 p.m.
