Box Score LA MIRADA, Calif. --- It took some late heroics from Biola's hero in a No. 1 jersey, but eventually an up-and-down game for the Eagles ended with victory, 61-58, over conference foe San Diego Christian.
Â
Biola and the Hawks are always very competitive when the meet, with two three-point games last season and another here tonight. It did not seem like this would be anything like their previous close meetings when Biola got a huge run in the middle portion of the second half, but a surge from the Hawks ensured some late intensity.
Â
Pierre Zook was the one who ended the late intensity by hitting a step-back jumper with just 11 seconds left to seal the three-point lead that was solidified with a defensive rebound by
Mike Kurtz on the other end.
Â
Zook was the star all night long for Biola, playing a composed game of basketball to post a team-high 17 points on 7-of-10 shooting. He was effective from deep, as is customary, going 3-5 from beyond the arc, and he also led the team with seven assists, his new season-high.
Â
The win came in front of a large and loud crowd of fans that were treated to what was not only a close game, but an exciting one as well. The Eagles posted some remarkable plays during their 10-minute 19-2 run early in the second half that helped them build a game-high 18-point lead with 15 to play.
Â
Kurtz and
Steve Herve were keeping the whole building, and everyone watching at home, very entertained with a bevy of blocks and dunks in the process of the mid-game heroics.
Â
Kurtz would end the game one point shy of a double-double, but his 15 rebounds would help the Eagles to a nearly double-digit rebounding advantage over the Hawks. This, and Kurtz's two blocks, coupled with two from Herve, gave Biola just enough possessions to lock down a win.
Â
Herve took some positive steps forward tonight after a rough end of the week leading into Thanksgiving. He ended with nine points, but claimed the marquee moments of the match with two humungous dunks late in the game.
Â
Turnovers nearly sunk the ship, as San Diego Christian was able to pull the game even inside of one minute left to play before the Zook step-back winner. The Hawks posted 19 points off the Eagles' 15 turnovers and limited themselves to just seven cough-ups.
Â
The Eagles improve to 10-1 and now 1-0 in Golden State Athletic Conference play. A loss drops San Diego Christian down to 4-3 and 0-1 in the conference.
Â
Biola is not back home until next week, but the team has a road game at William Jessup on Saturday.Â
