Box Score ATHERTON, Calif. --- Biola began its weekend in Northern California with a 3-1 (25-18, 28-30, 25-19, 25-20) win over Menlo. The win pushed the Eagles' remarkable winning streak to 14 games.
Â
It was no easy feat taking down the Cal Pac leading Menlo Oaks. The toughest moment of the match came when Menlo overcame a 14-20 deficit in the second set to earn its lone set win in a 28-30 affair.
Â
After that, Biola got down to business and returned to form in sets three and four. The Eagles made fewer attack errors in set three and four combined than they did in set two alone. Four straight attack errors in the middle of that set loss did not help the cause.
Â
"She's got a very scrappy, talented team up there. They were defending like maniacs," said Head Coach
Aaron Seltzer. "Those guys played really well. They could really surprise somebody if they win their tournament, which I think they will."
Â
Outside of the one set loss, it was business as usual for the Eagles as they rode an efficient attack and more powerful blocking game to a sound victory.
Â
Amy Weststeyn,
Britta Blaser and
Alyssa Mason drove the attack all night long, combining for 39 of the Eagles' 59 kills in the match. Weststeyn was especially dominant, recording 15 of those kills and hitting .464.
Â
For the second consecutive match, Biola saw more attack attempts than it took itself. The Oaks took 177 swings, as opposed to the Eagles' 171.
That kept the Biola's back row on the move throughout the night.
Alex Brehaut,
Charley Parker and
Jaci Schork anchored that back row with 10-plus digs.
Ashton Arbuthnot also played a key role in keeping the Oaks' attacks off the floor. She attained 12 digs to go with her 28 assists and three service aces.
Â
"We had to pass and serve and defend," said Seltzer. "It took us awhile to figure it out, but once we did we were solid."
Â
Biola improves to 26-4 and has now not lost in the last seven weeks. The Oaks drop to 14-10, but remain with a strong hold on first place in their conference.
The road trip continues as Biola gets back to conference play tomorrow afternoon at William Jessup at 2:00 p.m. Â
