Sharpshooting Success

Biola shoots nearly 60 percent from the floor to earn a convincing win on the road in Riverside.

Box Score RIVERSIDE, Calif. --- It's been just about a week since Biola opened its 2014-15 season with a dramatic overtime win against Fresno Pacific. The fun kept going on Thursday night as the Eagles returned to NAIA play with an 88-66 win over La Sierra to improve to 2-0.

Mike Kurtz and Pierre Zook took over the game for Biola, combining for more than half of the Eagles' 88 points. The senior duo was 18-29 from the floor to post 49 total points.

Zook's strong performance was powered by his three-point shooting touch, going 5-6 from behind the line. Kurtz posted his points bit-by-bit, putting in 11 shots from the floor for 22 of his team-high 25 points.

Biola blistered out to a 15-7 lead within the first eight minutes to get the team confidence and enough insurance to maintain the lead throughout. They held La Sierra under 40 percent from the floor and nearly doubled the home team's rebound total.

Conversely, the Eagles shot 58 percent from the floor in a near-perfect offensive performance. Steve Herve and Grant Corsi were a perfect 3-3 and 2-2 in field goals, respectively. Both players spent very limited time on the floor in this one, while Kurtz, Zook and Josh Throns spent nearly every minute of the game on the court together.

Throns had a difficult night, playing 32 minutes without making a single basket.

The Eagles' bench recorded 21 points in a strong performance. Colin Bossio and Christian Misi led the troops with six points a piece. Each of those players outscored La Sierra's entire bench, which only posted five points.

Misi added to his point total with a strong rebounding night. He and Kurtz led Biola with seven and nine rebounds, respectively. They each had three offensive rebounds in their tally as the Eagles got 11 total offensive boards.

Those 11 rebounds led to 11 second-chance points, which helped as the Eagles built up to as large as a 25-point lead late in the second half.

Biola is back home on Saturday as it hosts Northwest (WA) at 5:30 p.m. Both teams currently have a 2-0 record in the 2014-15 season.
