Box Score FULLERTON, Calif. --- The Eagles earned a ninth consecutive victory to begin the 2014-15 season on Tuesday with a nail-biter of a 54-50 win against Bellevue (NE) on the second day of the Hope Classic.
Â
It was not a conventional win by any means, but it gets the Eagles back to Chase Gymnasium with an unblemished record after four straight games on the road.
Â
Biola was aided by a dreadful shooting performance from the Bruins, who were just 14-65 from the field, with three of their starters failing to make a single shot from the floor at Hope International.
Â
Luckily for them, Biola had shots falling, but its bread-and-butter, the three-point shot, was not working at all. The Eagles combined to go just 2-16 from distance in the game. The cold shooting from deep held Biola to its lowest point total in a win this season.
Â
Mike Kurtz had one of those two three-point makes and the big man has made at least one three-pointer in six of the eight games he has attempted a deep shot. His three-point make in this game was critical as it came with under two minutes to play and extended an Eagle lead to nine points, all points needed to close out this close game.
Â
Kurtz's made three-pointer helped the Eagles get to a nine-point lead, which was its largest lead of the game. However, some three-point makes, free throw makes and some strong rebounding helped the Bruins close that gap to as few a two points inside the last minute of play as a dunk from Percy Lemle made it look as though Bellevue was primed for an upset.
Â
Two made free throws from
Pierre Zook helped the Eagles close out the nail-biter and maintain its loss-free season record.
Â
The Eagles shot 40 percent from the floor in this one, but were terrorized at the free-throw line, going just 8-18 overall. Biola also got outrebounded by nearly double-digits and allowed 25 free throws to the Bruins in an ugly win.
Â
Dakari Archer was again solid throughout, making nine field goals and tallying 21 points. He also grabbed two steals, two assists and six rebounds in a very productive 35 minutes on the floor.
Â
Kurtz used strong inside shooting to get his total to a team second-best 14 points and added 13 rebounds for yet another double-double. He and Biola dominated play in the paint, outscoring Bellevue, 26-12 inside.
Â
The 9-0 Eagles come back to Chase Gymnasium on Wednesday night for the final of back-to-back-to-back games. They host CSU Dominguez Hills (2-2) at 7:30 p.m.
