Box Score CLAREMONT, Calif. --- Pomona-Pitzer was just starting its season with Tuesday night's game, and it was evident from the get-go as the Sagehens sank just one shot in the first 9:42 of the game, handing Biola a 20-3 lead. That 17-point lead turned into a 17-point Biola win, 70-53.
Â
The lead carried the Eagles through much of the game as the Sagehens never took over the lead, or even got within fewer than seven points of Biola's lead. The Eagles held a double-digit lead through every second played in the second half.
Â
Dakari Archer and
Pierre Zook helped Biola get off to its scorching start, with Zook draining two threes early and Archer completing two drives to the hoop to account for 10 of the first 12 points of the game.
Â
The Eagles made five of their first nine attempts from the floor to get those 12 points, while in the same span of time the Sagehens were 0-for-9 on field goals. Pomona-Pitzer had the first possession of the contest and started off shaky immediately, going 0-3 from the floor in the first 30 seconds of play.
The Sagehens never did find their shooting touch, shooting at an even worse rate in the second half than they did in the first 20 minutes. Pomona-Pitzer was under 30 percent from the floor and, because of falling behind so big, so early, was forced to start chucking up three-point attempts early on.
Â
Thirty-six of the Sagehens' 72 shots from the floor were three-point attempts, by far the highest ratio of three-point field goals to standard field goals of any Biola opponent this season. Of those 36 shots, just six went through the net, including a dreadful 1-18 mark in the second half.
Â
Pomona-Pitzer's shooting woes put a band-aid over what was not an especially impressive shooting night from deep for Biola. Aside from Zook's two early three-point makes, it was like pulling teeth trying to get a shot to fall from deep. Zook was 0-4 from distance through the rest of the game, and the team shot just 5-14 overall.
Â
The two teams rebounded closely, were dead even on blocks and limited turnovers, but Biola dominated the scoring in the paint on this occasion.
Mike Kurtz led Biola's interior scoring with 20 points, while he and the Eagles outscored the Sagehens inside, 32-16.
Â
Pomona-Pitzer's lack of offense in the paint also helped the Eagles stay out of foul trouble, at least staying away from committing shooting fouls. The Sagehens did not attempts a single free throw until there was 8:22 left in the game.
Â
Kurtz's 20 points led Biola, and the senior tacked on 15 rebounds to make his fourth-straight double-double. Archer had a sound first game back from injury, tacking on 12 points, going 5-9 from the field and posting more assists than turnovers.
Christian Misi also scored in double-digits (11 points) for the first time this season.
Â
The win pushes Biola to 7-0 on the season and hands the Sagehens a home loss in their first contest of the year. The Eagles have the rest of the week off before competing against Fisk (TN) and Bellevue (NE) in the Hope Classic on Monday and Tuesday of next week. They'll have their third game in as many days when they host CSU Dominguez Hills at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday.
