I'll Have It Mike's Way

Mike Kurtz manhandles La Sierra and helps spark a 30-point win for Biola.

Steele Douglas got himself 11 points in some extended time on the floor on Wednesday.
Box Score LA MIRADA, Calif. --- It was a fun night for sure inside Chase Gymnasium as every active player on the Eagles' bench got to play and scored some points in a 78-48 victory over La Sierra. Mike Kurtz got the show started early, recording a double-double just 14 minutes into play. He ended with 26 points and 15 rebounds.

"It was an enjoyable night, as everybody got a chance to play and a number of guys played well," said Head Coach Dr. Dave Holmquist. "I though just about everybody played well and had some really good moments."

The Eagles were without Dakari Archer and Steve Herve on Wednesday night, but it really did not make much of a difference as the bench stepped up in a big way to help Holmquist to his 880th career win. He passed Dean Smith of North Carolina for eighth place on the all-time head coach wins list.

Steele Douglas and Blake Shannon, Jr. highlighted the strong performance off Biola's bench providing a spark in place of Archer. Shannon was all about distributing the ball, finding solid passing lanes and the right teammate to pass to, tied with Jola Otubu for a game-high six assists. Both players had more assists individually than the Golden Eagles put up all night (5).

Douglas showed his high motor all night long, hustling to get 11 points, two boards, a steal and two assists. He was 5-8 from the floor, making him the second-most efficient player on offense Biola had on the court.

Kurtz was the most efficient, going 11-15 with a couple of crowd-pleasing dunks and putback tip-ins to work his way to his third game this season with at least 15 points. He's twice broken 20 this season, with both of those big performances coming against La Sierra. He's turning it up from deep too, shooting 4-of-6 from behind the arc in the last three games, including 2-3 tonight.

"We got off to a quick lead, and a lot of that was what he [Kurtz] was doing. He blockes some shots and played really well," said Holmquist. "

Kurtz played so well early on that Holmquist had no choice but to pull him from the floor to get the bench some more playing time. His staggering numbers came in just 23 minutes on the hardwood.

Outside of Kurtz's heroics, most of Biola's scoring came from its guards, with just eight points out of the other two forwards in the game. Pierre Zook went 3-8 from the floor for seven points in limited playing time.

Josh Throns finally got on the shooting streak Biola's been waiting for, nailing three early three-pointers before finishing 3-6 from deep with nine points.

When all was said-and-done, 13 players saw time on the floor and recorded at least one point in a signature preseason victory for the Eagles. They move to 5-0 while La Sierra drops to 0-3.

Robert Looper was the top performer for La Sierra, putting up eight points, a team-high, and five rebounds, also a team-high, in 25 minutes.

The Eagles' put in a solid effort defensively, holding LSU's top player, Andre Marquez, who was averaging 18 points a game, to just seven points tonight. They also defended well around the basket, working 34 defensive rebounds while holding La Sierra to 11 offensive boards. They also raked in six blocks, including one from Otubu that stopped a LSU fast break and sent the whole gym into a roar late in the game.

Biola has a few days to refocus before resuming its preseason slate with a road game at UC Merced at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday.
