Box Score 2 SANTA CLARITA, Calif. --- It was a silent start to Golden State Athletic Conference play for Biola as they drop three straight to The Master's College, including two big losses in Saturday's doubleheader at Reese Field.
Â
The opener was setting up to be a close companion to yesterday's 2-1 Mustangs win, but a big double by TMC's Joe Riddle gave them a 4-1 advantage headed into the sixth inning.
Â
Jesse Yancosek got his second start of the season for the Eagles, and put in a stronger showing today, going six innings and giving up eight hits to the swift Master's offense.
Â
Danny Thompson earned the start for the Mustangs, going six innings and giving up just one run to the Eagles. Biola's first run came in the first inning as
Rob Groeschell scored off a base knock by
Michael Annunziata.
Â
It was the Eagles' third time this year taking an early lead. Both teams picked up some garbage runs late, and TMC ended up getting the 5-2 win.
Â
Thompson got the win to move to 2-0 on the year, while Yancosek drops to 0-1 after the loss. Jason Karkenny, a freshman, was the man who shutdown the Eagles after Riddle's go-ahead hit. He threw three innings of one-run ball and got his first save of the year.
Â
The second game of the day got off to a very rough start as the Mustangs put up six runs off new Biola starter
Eric Diomartich in the first inning.
Â
It was a rough start to his Eagles career as the transfer from Saddleback College gave up seven earned runs over the course of just 1.2 innings pitched. He faced 13 batters in his outing and gave up five hits and four walks.
Â
The Biola pitching staff settled down and began to get The Master's hitters out, but the Eagles could not get their bats going well enough to forge a comeback.
Â
Biola's offense struggled throughout the three-game sweep, as they mustered just four runs off 19 hits in the series. The offensive frustration came to a head in the finale, as they got just two hits.
Â
It was also a struggle in the field for the Eagles as they committed 10 errors in the series.
Â
The three losses to The Master's is more than Biola suffered all of last season, when they took down the Mustangs in four of six games. The Eagles move to 1-4 (0-3 GSAC) after the sweep at the hands of the No. 12 team in the nation. TMC moves to 6-0 (3-0 GSAC) and is in good position to start a season similar to their conference-winning campaign last year.

Head Coach
Jay Sullenger has a week to work with the team to get them prepared to host Westmont for a three-game series next Friday and Saturday.
