Biola Splits One-Run Games Against No. 13 Concordia

Paul Slater
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Biola split a pair of one-run games, losing a high-scoring affair but pulling out a win in a low-scoring contest to earn a split against No. 13 Concordia in a GSAC doubleheader on Saturday afternoon.

Biola ends the day at 25-20 on the season and sits in fifth in the GSAC with a 13-17 record. Concordia moves to 30-14 overall and to within 1.5 games of The Master's College for first place in the conference a 19-11 record.

For the second-straight day, Biola and Concordia turned an early pitcher's duel into a high-scoring affair. Despite trailing 11-4 going into the bottom of the ninth of game one, Biola rallied for six runs in the last frame but fell a run short in an 11-10 loss. In game two, Biola got a clutch run in the bottom of the sixth and held on for a 2-1 win in the nightcap.

In game one, Concordia opened with a pair of runs in the top of the first and added another in the top of the second to take an early 3-0 lead.

Biola responded with three in the bottom of the second to tie the game. Sam Thorne opened the inning with an infield hit which was followed by a walk to Michael Annunziata. Nick Oddo then followed with a three-run home run to right-center to tie the score at 3-3.

But Concordia scored twice in the fourth, once in the fifth, one in the seventh and broke it open with a four-spot in the eighth to take an 11-4 lead to the bottom of the ninth.

Biola put on an impressive rally in the ninth, though, to make the game exciting. Oddo led off the inning with a single and moved to third on a double by Tanner Swire. The pair advanced 90 feet on a passed ball and Swire score on a pinch-hit single by Michael Chriss to cut it to 11-6. After a walk to Johnny Farrington, Biola got another run on an error by Concordia and pulled to within one on a big three-run home run by Vince Lawrence.

All of the runs came with no one out, but Concordia was able to get three quick outs after that on a ground out and a fly out to end the game at 11-10.

The second game was a much lower-scoring affair. While Concordia put at least one runner on base in each of the seven innings, the visitors managed just one run.

Biola got the first run of the game thanks to an error in the second inning. Oddo led off with a walk and was sacrificed to second by Swire. After a strikeout, an error by Concordia extended the inning and put runners on the corners. Paul Slater cashed in with a single right up the middle to bring home Oddo with the game's first run.

Concordia had its chances in the first four innings, but finally broke through with a run in the fifth, getting an RBI-single to tie the game at 1-1.

Biola took back the lead in the sixth inning. Sam Thorne led off with an infield single and pinch-runner James Castelli moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Annunziata. An infield groundout by Oddo advanced him to third and a wild pitch brought him in with the go-ahead run.

Freshman Trevor Oaks finished up the game by getting a pair of ground outs, then hit a batter, but got a fly out to end the game. Oaks allowed just one run on four hits over seven innings to improve to 4-5 on the season. He did walk four batters including one intentionally, but struck out three including two to end innings with runners in scoring position.

The victory in the second game snapped a 10-game losing streak against Concordia dating back to 2011 and gave Biola its first win in six tries against its GSAC rivals this year.

Biola returns to the field on Friday, opening a three-game series at Vanguard University.
