Box Score LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Biola overcame an early three-run deficit with a late rally and received solid pitching from senior
Nick Turner en route to an 8-4 win over San Diego Christian College in a GSAC game on Saturday afternoon.
The Eagles take the first game of the three-game, GSAC series and improve to 15-11 on the season and to 7-9 in conference play. The Hawks fall to 16-9 and to 7-9 in the GSAC.
Turner shook off some early rust to pull out the complete-game win, striking out 13 batters and allowing just five hits to improve to 5-2 on the season. After allowing four runs on four hits through the first 3-1/3 innings, Turner retired 15-straight batters and 20 of the final 21 hitters to end the game.
Turner's 13 strikeouts were a career-high, breaking his previous best of 10 set earlier this season. He had not recorded double-figures in strikeouts through his prior two seasons at Biola.
Biola took the early lead with a run in the bottom of the first inning. Vince Lawrence drew a one-out walk and came around to score on a double to left by Benji Sutherland, making it 1-0.
San Diego Christian answered right back with a run in the top of the second, tying it up with a two-out rally. With two down, Gilbert Vierra was hit by a pitch, stole second, moved to third on a single and scored on a wild pitch.
In the third inning, Tyler Eichhorst gave San Diego Christian a lead with a three-run home run to left-center to make it 4-1.
Biola got one of those runs bad in the fourth. Sutherland was hit by a pitch to start off the inning and moved to second on a one-out walk to Sam Thorne. Michael Annunziata then singled to right-center to bring home Sutherland and make it 2-0. However, with runners at the corners and one out, the Hawks worked out of the jam with a double play.
Biola got one run closer in the sixth as Lawrence led off with a single, moved to second on a single by Sutherland, to third on a fly ball out by Nick Oddo and scoring on a sacrifice fly by Thorne.
The Eagles finally took back the lead with a prolonged rally in the seventh. With one out, David McNeill singled and Johnny Farrington drew a walk to put two on for leadoff man Paul Slater. Slater then drove in everyone with a three-run home run to left to make it 6-4. The Eagles would add one more later in the inning as Lawrence singled and came around to score on a two-out single by Thorne.
Lawrence capped his impressive day with an RBI single in the eighth inning to bring home James Petrilli and set up the final score of 8-4.
Lawrence was 3-for-4 on the day with three runs scored and an RBI while Sutherland went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored.
Biola and San Diego Christian close out the three-game set with a Monday doubleheader beginning at 12:00 pm at Eagles Diamond.
