Box Score 2 PHOENIX, Ariz. --- While the pair of freshman pitchers put together solid efforts on short rest, the offense was unable to cash in on multiple opportunities to provide run support as Biola was swept in a GSAC doubleheader at Arizona Christian on Thursday, falling 3-2 and 3-0.
The Eagles fall to 12-15 on the season and drop down to fifth place in the GSAC standings with a 12-15 conference mark. The Firestorm improves to 20-14 and jumps up into third place in the conference with a 13-14 GSAC record.
Biola's freshman pitching duo--which had struggled through the last month--put together an impressive showing, allowing just six runs on 11 hits combined.
However, the Eagles' offense was able to muster just two runs despite 14 hits, going 1-for-17 with runners in scoring position and just 4-for-24 with runners on base in the doubleheader.
Arizona Christian got the early drop on Biola with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to go up 2-0 on a two-out, two-run single.
The Eagles got one run back in the fifth inning. Michael Chriss led off the inning with a single and Nick Oddo was hit by a pitch to put two on. Tanner Swire followed with a single to left to load the bases with no one out. Biola was able to get a run as Johnny Farrington hit into a double play, but a strikeout ended the inning with the tying run at third.
Biola managed to tie the game with a run in the eighth inning, but could have had a lot more. With one out, Vince Lawrence singled to up the middle followed by a single by Benji Sutherland which put runners on the corners. Sam Thorne grounded out, but tied the game by bringing Lawrence home. An intentional walk to Michael Annunziata followed by a walk to pinch-hitter James Petrilli loaded the bases. However, a groundout ended the inning.
Arizona Christian would take back the lead in the bottom of the eighth on an RBI ground out. Biola tried to tie it up again in the ninth as back-to-back walks to Swire and Farrington put two on with no one out. But a pair of ground outs and a fly out ended the game without the Eagles getting another run.
Josh Staumont allowed just three runs on five hits over 7-1/3 innings pitched, striking out 11 batters. However, he suffered the loss and fell to 4-5 on the season.
In game two, Biola was unable to push a run across the plate to support the strong start by Trevor Oaks. Oaks, who picked up his second-straight complete game, allows just one earned run on six hits over six innings, striking out five in the game. He allowed a run in the third and a pair of unearned runs in the fifth.
Biola struggled to get things going offensively but seemed to be putting things together in the top of the fifth inning. With two out and the bases empty, Swire and Farrington singled to put a pair on base. But a ground out ended the inning.
The Eagles were unable to get another runner on base the rest of the way.
Biola returns to action on Tuesday, hosting No. 3 Cal State San Marcos in a non-conference game at Eagles Diamond beginning at 3:00 p.m.
